RomanW70 (207), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Apr 18, 2008 Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of plums, raisins, caramel, toffee, and alcohol. Excellent flavor of dark fruits, brown sugar, and carlamel with string vineous notes. Dry and sweet on the finish. Very nice Belgian.
DrHomolka (568), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 30, 2008 11.2oz bottle. When I popped the cap foam slowly started to gush up the neck of the bottle. Upon pouring the golden liquid created one of the foamiest, rockiest, biggest white heads I’ve ever seen on a beer. This thing gives Fantome a run for its money in the ’gigantic soapy heads that are so thick and firm they are like bubble bath I could apply to my face and make a beard that stays there’ category. Lacing is awesome. The aroma is nearly identical to Duvel. That normal fruity, peppery, spicy, yeasty, estery Belgian golden ale smell. Perhaps a touch of funk in there as well but I could be reaching. Taste is dry, peppery, with a grainy, rough texture. No sweetness or esters in the flavor. I am a huge fan of the Special Reserve version of this beer so I was excited to try this. This obviously is not nearly as good but I think it is one of the better examples of the style I have had. foodtraveller (21), Belgium Jun 27, 2008 Quite some carbonation with taste of caramel, citrus and malt all over. Rather nice with a medium thickness in the mouth and an ok sweet and aftertaste. I hopes in more complexity. kiefdog (270), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 25, 2008 11.6oz bottle from World of Beer (Largo, FL). Pours a dark brown with one finger tan, frothy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet and spicy with notes of caramel, bread, yeast, yogurt. Flavor is initially sweet and sour that gives way to a burst of ripe fruit, tart, earthy and malt notes, and a lingering sweet, earthy finish. Medium-bodied. cluny6 (26), Cambridge, England Jun 25, 2008 dark amber ale with lots of head. Cloudy with noticeable yeast. Fizzy, malty sour taste. Good but not my favorite. 1_2many (101), Ohio, USA Jun 24, 2008 First of mine from De Dolle. Lots of carbonation. Hazy brown amber pour with a large fizzy head. Lots of malt and sour darkfruit in the nose. Flavor is a nice balance of bittersweet and sourness. Smooth fizzy palate. Impressive.
