durhambeer (397), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 15, 2008 First De Dolle I’ve had that wasn’t a gusher, but the carbonation was still plentiful, pouring a nice amber-tinted off white head on top of a deep bright reddish amber hazy pour. Yeast, malt, bread, intense and complex candied fruit and brown sugar on the nose and even more so on the palate. Would love to taste this aged a few years, though the intensity it has now is really lovely.
KnN (261), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Aug 28, 2008 Couldn’t find a date on the bottle, but I’m wondering if it was a little old. Beer opened with a huge hiss and when poured had a gigantic offwhite head that lasted forever. Took about five minutes to pour the whole beer.
Aroma is a little apple, a lot of malt, some all spice? Licorice, dark fruit. A lot going on there.
Flavor is similarly complex, tart, a little bitter, a lot of alcohol burn. Some nice subtle plum/raisin flavors with some good malt sweetness. A little bitter. Tastes like it might be slightly oxidized, but not horribly. Great beer. I’d love to try another one fresh. NoiZe (893), Zeist, Netherlands Aug 28, 2008 Brown, amber colored brew.Aroma is spicy, some fruits. Flavor is hoppy, nice bitterness and some spices. MuttyD (64), Cambridge, USA Aug 24, 2008 Took me a while to find this one, but the wait was well worth it. Typical spicy, malty, and sugary aroma and flavor. As the beer moves across the palate, the flavor shifts from sweet to more of a sour/tart flavor. Finish is sweet and sour as well. Amazing beer. paiste2002 (16), Saugus, California, USA Aug 24, 2008 Pours a hazy reddish brown with a big off white head. Some dark fruit in the aroma as well as spices, dark candi sugar almost port like. Flavor is complex dark fruit, port, spice roasted malt. Sweet yet sour in the finish. Yet another fine brew from the Mad Brewers. MrChopin (165), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2008 Another large de dolle head, this time beige on top of an opaque mahogany. The nose has some dark fruit, yeasty bubblegum, tripel spices, and most surprisingly, a large sour component. The flavor reflects the sour character and is quite tart with belgian malts, yeast, pepper, and cherry cough medicine, malt long in the aftertaste. With warmth there’s a fantastically tart balance of sweet yet sour caramel and fruit. Medium-bodied and a little fizzy, this is a complex and intriguing beer.
