COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Bottle - Pours mahogany with a huge cream-colored head. Smells of sour blueberries, raisins, red wine, sweet bready malt, and a whiff of booze. Taste is raisins, sweet malt, and a sour, bitter finish. There’s some nice warmth, but it would be nice if this settled down a bit and evened out. It’s a bit too syrupy and the carbonation is jacked up a bit too much. The first De Dolle beer I’ve had that was a bit disappointing.

33cl bottled april 2011. Dark red/brown with small tanned head. Nose : the smell is strong of alcohol and roasted malts. The dried raisins and vanilla. Caramel to coffee notes. It smells like a tart. Sip : the carbonation is strong and the density is low but creamy. Sweet with fruity ester notes. The alcohol is warming. Complex fruit aromas are dry and a bit sour. Overall the ending is a bit spicy and dry.

330ml bottle @ Viisi Penniä, Helsinki

Pours dark red with a small light brown head. Aroma of fruits, tart apples, malts and spices. Taste is quite carbonated with notes of red wine, tart apples, cherries, sweet malts and spices. Finish is warming, slightly bitter and fruity. Quite unusual, but tasty and well balanced.

Bottle from a friend. Strong alcohol aroma with date notes. The malts and yeast makes up most of the flavor, but also notes of orange peel, spice and black chai. The dark body and brown head provides a soft pillowy cushion for the beer. Really tasty.

Binny’s LP 330ml ($6): Pours a brownish color with a light beige head. Aroma is of slightly roasty malts, Belgian yeast, dark frutiness, and a hint of booze. Taste is predictable, but still very much excellent. Balance is pulled off very well. Mouthfeel is slightly carbonated. Beer is a little warming as it goes down. Has some champagne-like qualities, although not as many as other De Dolle beers. Malts and yeast are the main attractions here and the hops are very subdued. The beer is slightly sweet, but very far from sugary. Aftertaste is there, but not all that much. Not my favourite De Dolle, but still quite good.

Draft at Brass Tap. Dark pour. Excellent aroma and flavor. Fairly well hidden alcohol.

330ml bottle
9.0% ABV (as written on the bottle)
I tried this beer on January 20, 2012 at "The Beerbistro" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a medium dark brown with a huge tan head that was easily resurrected. The aroma was dark malt, sugar, apples, and toffee. The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied, with high carbonation. The flavour is sweet malt, caramel, licorice, and fruit.

Deep reddish brown colour. Medium-sized off-white head. High carbonation level, and the texture is very fizzy. Rich and spicy aroma with notes of black pepper and cinnamon. Funky, but mostly sweet in the nose. Carbonation dominates the mouthfeel. Rich flavours. Sugars clearly used to make this beer. A little cloying perhaps, but overall an enjoyable beer.

33 cl bottle @ home, BBE 08/2010
Aroma is salty with licorice, herbs and spices. Also hints of metal. Flavour is rather unique and tart with citrus, flowery notes, salt, licorice and some warming alcohol. Dry finish. Really oer stuff.
