Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

33 cl bottle from Etre Gourmet. Pours deep red with a large beige head that is fizzy. Aroma of roasted malts and dark dried fruits. Flavor is sweet and bitter. A bit infected this one ? Some acid notes. Strange.

For sure the best of the De Dolle triumvirate tasting from today. I think my rating may be skewed a bit high from perception - the reserve version of this is on the RateBeer Top 50 Belgium. But anyway - it’s fantastic. High-ABV but drinkable. Probably sits somewhere between 8-10 on my scale but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt with a 9 until next tasting.

330 ml bottle during Brussels vacation. Reddish amber with beige head. Aroma of malt, sour candy, light fruit, grapes and some soapy detergent notes. Taste is medium sweet, grapes, malty, sugars with a finish with grape peels and sugar.

The very first Dolle beer, since 1980, and in that respect one of the first modern craft beers in Belgium. Had a crate in the cellar last year but forgot to properly rate it - hence this rating based on old notes. Hazy bronze coloured under a very thick and moussy, lacing, pale beige head. Very estery and yeasty, elegant and inviting aroma; overripe grapes and peaches, raisins, brown bread, port wine, caramel, floral hops. Sweet onset, not cloying candi sugar sweetness, very estery and fruity, ’Belgian’ yeastiness, soft mouthfeel with spritzy carbonation, nice caramelly malt sweetness, evolving into a lightly spicy, yeasty, florally hop bitterish finish with agreeable warming, port-like alcohol and a hint of roasted bitterishness - which, I hasten to add, wasn’t there when I first tasted this, the recipe clearly has been altered a bit some years ago to approach a more Scotch-style ale, but then this seems to have been its original form so I guess it has been kind of returned to its own roots. I liked the previous version better, especially fresh from tap at the brewery, but this still is a great, tasty classic.

Bottle from trade with ElManana, many thanks!

From the start, when I opened the bottle, I had to be realy quick, cause of the foam and yeast coming out of the bottle on a fast tempo. The aroma is realy sweet, the brown sugar comes out, together with some burned caramel. The taste is sweet at the beginning, but results in a fine bitterness at the end, you can taste some caramel. it’s a fine, well-balanced beer.

It’s caramel, spices, light malts beer with a mild bitter finish, that doesn’t linger long.
