13-Mar-12 (750-ml bottle)
This tasty Belgian ale brewed with ginger is a wonderfully refreshing beer. The moderately sweet, fairly bready, doughy, and mildly toasty malts set a substantial base, while light hops add a touch of grassiness and modest bitterness, and ginger gives the flavor quite a bit of spicy pizzazz into the long finish. The nose is very similar, with aromas of ginger, hay, sweet, bready malts, honey, and alcohol. The beer is medium-full bodied with some additional weight from residual sugar, and the carbonation is low-medium, but the ginger makes up for that with its added vibrancy. Clear and pale-golden in color, though subsequent pours are cloudy, and the off-white head pours to nearly an inch before settling to a wide ring and dusty coating. Overall, this is a pretty nice beer. The ginger is at just the right level so that proper balance is maintained. I donít know if Iíd buy it again, but I at least enjoyed all 750-ml of this beer tonight.

Donkergeel bier met schuim. Smaak is fruitig licht zoet met gember, niet te sterk waardoor het toch goed te drinken is. Blijft redelijk lang hangen.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Original spiced ale with off-white head and cloudy peach blonde robe. Pleasant ginger and gingerbread aroma, hints of caramel, orange and cinnamon, taste a sweetish spiciness much like gingerbread, very aromatic, even a bit sharp at times, citrus, finishing herbally hoppy. Either you like ginger or you donít, but if you do, there is no denying this is a very enjoyable and creative ale.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Stubby bottle, 330 ml. Poured into a tulip glass, ABV 8%
Golden orange colour on a hazy body, small white head, quite thick, with very good retention, leaving light lacing on the glass.
Aroma mainly of ginger, some malts behind, citrusy notes too but those are a "by-product" of the ginger.
Taste of yeast, light fruity, citrus, ginger, light spicy, sugar. A bit sweet.
Medium thin body, good carbonation.
Overall quite good, pleasantly drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Gold with a white head. Aroma of ginger - some mellow, a bit of young spicy bite - honeyed hay, light dough, oranges. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Alcohol is completely hidden. Ginger takes a back seat for a while, then comes back at the finish - until then itís a rather pleasant, somewhat doughy, fruity blond. The ginger pervades but never overpowers - itís really nicely done.
