3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
13-Mar-12 (750-ml bottle)
This tasty Belgian ale brewed with ginger is a wonderfully refreshing beer. The moderately sweet, fairly bready, doughy, and mildly toasty malts set a substantial base, while light hops add a touch of grassiness and modest bitterness, and ginger gives the flavor quite a bit of spicy pizzazz into the long finish. The nose is very similar, with aromas of ginger, hay, sweet, bready malts, honey, and alcohol. The beer is medium-full bodied with some additional weight from residual sugar, and the carbonation is low-medium, but the ginger makes up for that with its added vibrancy. Clear and pale-golden in color, though subsequent pours are cloudy, and the off-white head pours to nearly an inch before settling to a wide ring and dusty coating. Overall, this is a pretty nice beer. The ginger is at just the right level so that proper balance is maintained. I don’t know if I’d buy it again, but I at least enjoyed all 750-ml of this beer tonight.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma of pickled ginger with peppery yeast. Ginger is definitely the first thing noticeable and then lemon/lime and strong spices such as cardamom & coriander. Nice dryness & bitterness in the aftertaste. Quite pleasantly surprised by this one.

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
33 cl, flaske, 8,0 %, købt i Belgisk Bryg i Emdrup, 23. oktober 2013.
Overraskende god!

I usually don’t like ginger, but it worked very well in this one. I think the bitter dryness of the beer helped.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Amber/yellow pour with an off-white head. Aromas of yeast, and spices (coriander, ginger, and some citrus peel). The ginger character on this was a lot less pronounced than I was expecting. The flavor is a bit bland really. Overall, this was an alright brew, I wouldn’t order it again though...just too underwhelming.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
11.2 oz fat squat brown bottle of "Belgian Ale brewed with ginger" served at about 56F in a St. Bernardus snifter. Coding on cap indicates a best by date of June 2013.
A: Pours a hazy amber with a thin but very durable off-white head that leaves some sticky lacing.
Aroma: a pronounced, but not intimidating, note of ginger with a surprisingly obvious hits of lemon and spicy hops. Hints of yeasty baked bread from the subtle malts and not-so-subtle yeast.
T: Started with ginger and spicy yeast, the flavor profile transforms across time, with flavors of lemon and lime joining in momentarily before the surprisingly delicate finish.
M: Medium-full body; medium, very soft carbonation. A very light tingle from the higher ABV and ginger.
O: Allowing that Brouwerij De Graal intended to make ginger a prominent component of this beer, the level of spicing is excellent. Ginger is one of the main features of both the aroma and the flavor, yet many other components come through without being masked by the ginger. Certainly one of the best ginger beers I’ve tried.
