omhper (10393), Stockholm, Sweden Nov 21, 2002 Bottled. Reddish brown. Estery, yeasty, fruity, nutty and funky. Rather malty and sweet with somewhat salty finish. Rastacouere (5258), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 4, 2007 Draught, Arendsnest. Huge and spectacular beige head, in a chalice of all places!, leaves constant and methodical lacing over the surprising murky brown body. Yeast forward nose offers a light funk along the confident cotton-candy, biscuits, chocolate milk and various esters. The dark toasted malts feel coherent with this proactive yeastiness. Certainly a bit sweet of a beer, but supported by enough spicy hints (though perhaps not the usual ones: cloves, nutmeg) to be a distant cousin of the saison style. Let’s call it a Christmas example if such a thing may be excused. MiP (4927), Flensburg, Germany Oct 21, 2007 Draught, 6.5% at ’t Arendsnest. Fruity aroma, nice and citric. Quite dark red/brown colour, and rather cloudy. Nice tan head, very big and very stable. Good flavour, mildly teaish with some orange juice notes. Medium bitterness. Good balance. bierkoning (4691), La Tropica, Netherlands Nov 5, 2002 Updated: Jan 9, 2008Creamy head. Hoppy, perfumy aroma with pineapple. Hoppy, almost oily, herbal flavor with cinnamon. Good lace, almost prickly. Long hopbitter finish. (7 4 7 3 14 = 3.5)
I’m less satisfied with the new brew. Brown color, big frothy head. malt and cinnamon in the aroma. Malty fruity estery, somewhat yeasty flavor with bitter walnuts and cinnamon. JorisPPattyn (4262), Antwerpen, Belgium May 30, 2006 Dark chestnut-red, with just off-white, thick & creamy slightly irregular head. Malty nose, containing coloured malts and yeasty notes. Not very outspoken. Sourish taste, banana flavour upon lactic acid touch. Yet the malt gives it plenty of sweetness. Bit of chocolate retronasal. Very well bodied despite the acidity. Some alcohol, and generally speaking pretty dry. Not half bad. But what is a "double Saison" ?? Little to do with the Hainaut saisons, anyway, wrong area besides.
