COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This special ale has been developed in honour of the brewing in the late Middle Ages when the farmers could not work in the fields during the winter months and therefore had time to devote themselves to brewing ale. Winter Koninck is a deep amber-coloured top-fremented ale with 6.5% Alc. vol. and a full-bodied flavour.

Keg at North Bar, Leeds. Pours an exciting red colour, virtually no head. Aroma is a little caramel, Belgian least funk. Taste is hard to pin down, definite, nice Belgian yeast character. Caramel tones and a little spice also present. Intriguing and all the better for it. Nice long finish, a little sticky. It’s a good ’un.

33cl bottle. Poured dark amber with a white head. Aroma is sweet fruity, some yeasty notes as well as weak hoppyness. Flavor is yeast, fruit and some herbal notes. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Average. Probably will not try again.

Bottled: Clear orange-red beer with a huge, but quickly diminishing tan head. Aroma is malty and fruity with notes of caramel and biscuits and hints of dried fruits. Taste is dominated by malty caramel-flavors nicely balanced by a nondescript but prominent bitterness. Very drinkable yet rather mediocre x-mas/winter beer.

If you ever had a normal De Koninck, well it’s just dubble plavor. It’s actually a Belgian Pale Ale, banana flavor, slight hoppy with a nice caramel after tast. Very easy drinkable.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2012 This time, doesn’t have such a perfect appearance and major mashy banana on the nose. Apart from this, basically the same. Previous rating 22/12/11 7+5+6+13 = 3.5 33cl bottle. Pours amber/red with fast steady bubbles and a very generous head. The nose has fudge and digestive biscuits. The taste has ginger biscuits and brown sugar, then charcoal at the end. The palate is medium bodied and textured with a nice dry finish. Overall, a nice beer.

draft – sampled @ De Groote Witte Arend: A: clear wine-hued brown with a white head – T: bitter winter spices, yeast, caramel malt, touch candy sugar, slightly sweet upfront with a bitter hop aftertaste with S being same as T- B: on the slightly light side – ok offering from the Koninck – seemingly oddly uncommon given the all-around presence of the regular one over here

As Arsenaaltje, at Oud Arsenaal. Pours a cloudy dark gold body with a frothy white head that fell to a creamy dense mass. The nose is your typical Belgian Blond nose, some bready malts, some wet hay, with light yeastiness and fruitiness. The flavor is fairly clean and light with dry bready malts. A minimal hop note on the finish. Light bodied, rather soft and a touch creamy in texture with nice light gentle carbonation. Nice easy drinking beer, on par with most other Blondes.
