0.33L bottle bought in Brussels, enjoyed at home. Good-looking. Dim ruby-brown color. Dense stable eggshell colored head. Mildly spiced, caramelly and nutty malt aroma. A nice sourish note, probably from some Münchener malts added. Taste is much of the same; Semi-dry, nutty and caramelly, with spice tones an a touch of sourish dark bread. A fair amount of bittering hops. Clean mouthfeel. Less than medium full. Easy drinkable and tasty. I really like this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Chris O’s pre GBBF shindig. I’ve got ’13’ written down, no idea what that all means, maybe a new 13% version? If there is I can’t find it so I’ll rate what I had here! Dark brow pour with a beige head. Raisins, butterscotch, toffee and chocolate aroma. Caramel, chocolate and heavy malt presence. Heavy, sweet finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rund, søtlig og behagelig, men uten noen egentlig karakter. En litt kjedelig øl, men god likevel. Balansert sødme, litt tørr ettersmak.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Richer taste than the original De Koninck. Still quite watery aftertaste. A nice dark beer in its category.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
20-Dec-10 (750-ml corked and caged bottle, Best Before 06-Sep-08: Purchased 23-Dec-07 at the Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad, CA) One might have to ignore that this is a Belgian beer in order to maximize the enjoyment. The malty, medium-sweet nose offers caramel, toffee, earth, brown sugar, and dark bread. The flavor is decidedly malty and, dare I say, more British in character than Belgian, with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, mild winter spicing, raisins, and a touch of milk chocolate. There a touch of breadiness and other oxidative notes that are to be expected from two years of aging, but these flavors work nicely with the beer’s defining characteristics. However, and quite surprisingly, there is little in the way of the yeast-driven flavors often associated with Belgian beers, and this perhaps coincides with the fact that there is absolutely no yeasty sediment in the bottle, nor is the beer cloudy. The amber-colored beer exhibits a chill haze that clears to fairly good clarity. Half an inch of off-white foam settles quickly to a disappointingly thin ring. All in all, this is a pleasant, easy drinking, malty beer for the winter season, though it’s surprisingly unchallenging on the palate for a Belgian beer.

bottle. Clear chestnut colour, mid-sized off-white head. Aroma of sherry. Full-bodied, malty, lots of dreid fruit, caramel and sherry, perhaps also port wine. The sherry flavours together with the shy hints of alcohol make this beer a smooth and delicious winter beer.
