Pours a nice amber/copper color, but the head quickly disappears. Aroma has a bit of the caramel sweetness and a bit of biscuity malt. Smooth beer thats fairly balanced, but it does leave a lingering sweetness on the palate.

Bräunlich-amber. Nase Malznoten, an ein normales Dunkel erinnernd. AM gaumen Malz, etwas Holz, etwas Süße, insgesamt etwas schwach, aber gut trinkbar.

(bottle) clear amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of powdered sugar, nettles and yeast, with a hint of caramel, goat’s cheese and melted butter. flavour is mostly pale malts, powdered sugar and coriander, with quite a bit of alcohol and a semi-dry finish. light-to medium-bodied with average carbonation.

This Belgian Ale is a dark amber color. White cream, frothy, thick, medium training and good durability. Formed reasonable cream in cup ties. The malty flavor is moderately caramel, biscuit, reasonably hops Floral, spicy other, lime, as well as the presence of grains, nuts, and some floral yeast. The flavor has a simple roasted character, biscuit with sweet malt, some fruity emerges the senses. Clearly felt a little iron, yet not acted alarmingly in the set. A spicy touch the language, grassy hop bitter finish and a little mineral course. Medium to light body, slightly watery, with smooth taste, good carbonation bubbles with medians. Not apossui no residue or suspended material in your body. The aftertaste is malty and slightly dry, which fortunately asks another sip. It has high drinkability. Serves its purpose as a simple and honest beer to quench thirst and is not intended to duel with the more traditional Belgian beers.

33cl draft @ Fortunia ’Bij Gerda’ in Antwerp. Also had it from bottle many times, as it is a highly commercialized special belge from Antwerp.

The classic Antwerp interpretation of ’spéciale belge’ (Belgian amber ale), affectively refered to as ’bolleke’ (an affection I can sympathize with, though I have the impression it has positively influenced some of the Belgian ratings here...). Tasted dozens of times from tap and bottle for many years, I suddenly noticed I hadn’t rated it yet. Clear coppery amber colour with good fizz, egg-white, lacing head fairly loose from tap but more moussy from bottle. Straightforward toasted and biscuity, bittersweet malt character, some restrained fruitiness, some iron but not disturbingly so, sourish touch, grassy hop bitterish finish, bit minerally, lean and rather thin body. Serves its purpose as a straightforward but ’honest’ quencher, I’d recommend people visiting Antwerp and not going after specialty beers to drink this instead of bland macro lagers. Classic embodiment of the style, along with Palm; this one seems a bit more genuine and has more balancing bitterness than the latter so in the times when I consumed this beer style by the gallons, I used to prefer this over Palm. It should also be noted that this classic family brewery was threatened with bankrupcy a couple of years ago and was fortunately saved by Moortgat, where I trust this beer is in good hands...
