On tap at the reef: A light copper golden color with a big fluffy white head. Enjoyed this belgian ale quite a bit, it was fruity malty, sugary sweet, a tiny bit metallic, with a crisp dry finish.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2007 The first time I had this I thought it tasted more like an apple, pear cinnamon drink than beer come to think of it I never had one on tap while in Antwrep. Page 136 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 420 Classic Brews to go.

Bottle. Pours a clear bubbly orangey-amber with an average size lasting rocky off-white head. Nice lacing. Pretty good looking beer. Mild aroma of malt, fruit, light hops and yeast. Flavour is sweet fruity malt with a mild bitter aftertaste. A pleasant surprise to taste hops in a Belgian Ale. Not terribly exciting but still a well balanced, enjoyable and easy to drink beer.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Martinus (663) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - MAY 26, 2011
Had a chance encounter with the brewer a short while ago, so thought I should drink his beer again. It just made me think again about De Koninck and that is a rather nice example in the Speciale Belge genre.
It has quite a beautiful, clear amber colour, fluffy thought small head. Aroma of caramel and sweet malts. Some slight banana. Flavour of malts, sweet but not too sweet, rather dry, balanced notes of hops. Very balanced beer, could’ve been a bit more hoppy for my liking but that just wouldn’t fit the genre.
(From tap, in a "bolleke" glass of course)

Enjoyed from an 11.2oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours a medium amber color, with a white head that fairly quickly falls away. The nose has a nice range of complexity, showing at first some pilsner-derived grainyness/sweetness, followed by a nice, if, subtle caramel note, and finished by some yeast-derived esters. The palate is simple, straightforward, and pleasant. Malt and yeast dominate, but create a nice malange of flavors, raning from light caramel to subtle fruits. Overall, not as good as I was expecting, but it is easy to understand why this is the everyday beer of drinkers in Antwerp.

Bottle.
A: Poured with a small, off-white head that diminished very quickly. Body is amber-colored and slightly hazy, with some sediment floating around. Nothing exemplary, to say the least.
S: Again, nothing to blow my mind. I can smell traces of malt and yeast, but they’re fairly weak.
T: Improving slightly on the look and aroma, it begins lightly malty and sweet. Slight presence of bready taste, and then it actually finishes with a little bitterness.
M: Nice on the palate... light-bodied, but slightly creamy texture to it, with lively carbonation.
D: An easy-drinking beer that isn’t anything special, especially for a Belgium ale. My first beer of this style, however, so not sure how it compares to other Flanders Reds. Still, definitely an agreeable beer.

250ml Bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Ruby/amber colour, clear, one fat finger head. The smell was described as "homebrew Bockbier gone wrong by a tester on biertestonline.de" Strange aroma but it didn’t put me off. Had a yeasty rasberry taste, I thought it was like a thin double. Nice texture, overall decent but is probably best on draught in Antwerpen/Anvers

Clear dark orange pour, thin white head. Very low carbonation (on tap at sin and redemption in Toronto). Aroma is fruity strawberry and a light yeast. Smooth medium mouthfeel. Flavour is mild, caramel and yeast with a slight minerality in the finish. Not very exciting but sessionable.
