3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JorisPPattyn (6426) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - APR 12, 2003
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2005 (draught) Totally clear amber-fox. Thick yellowish head, lacey. Nose of ambrée malts, some sugar and hops, CO2 is even obvious in the nose. A bit of burned rubber (sulphur). Aroma as freshly gristed malt. Taste, IMO, the ideal balance between sweet and bitter from noble hops. CO2 gives an ever so slight sourish hint. Biscuit (cookies) flavour. Very fresh De Koninck has a flavour as from freshly mown grass. Light-bodied. Well saturated, not fizzy. Refreshing. In the aftertaste, all tastes struggle and the hopbitterness lasts. NEVER confound a draught ‘bolleke’ with the bottled product. Filtered, but not pasteurised, this is a mega-difference. NEVER visit Antwerpen without drinking one. Not all pubs serve it equally well, though. To an Antwerpener, this is the standard (=/ the best beer!) by which all other beers are measured.

Reminded me a lot of a clean golden pale ale. I can see why this is an everyday drink in antwerp. Nice and sweep with just enough hop character. Nice.

well balanced ale. for some reason i always end up buying bigger belgians and ignoring some of the lighter more subtle brews that can often be just as satisfying. this tasted good with a light tartness to it.

16 ounce pint - $6.50 at Taco Mac in Buford, Georgia.
Appearance: Served up a clouded, amber-brown body with a thin, wispy, near white head.
Smell: Aroma of generously toasted bread and caramel sauce with a light, spicy-scented yeastiness and background fruitiness.
Taste: Opens with a maltiness tasting of caramel-dunked cinnamon bread. It’s sweet, but not particularly so. Light tangy fruitiness with tastes of apricots, apples, and bananas. Faint bitterness. Late-arriving pop of brown sugar. Body thins out as you near the end. Drying, lightly fruity, lightly spicy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation with a bit of sharpness to it.
Drinkability: A little light when it comes to flavor and complexities, but, considering it’s just a mere 5% ABV, it ain’t half bad.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ethereal (2355) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 1, 2008
On tap at the White Horse, 25th August 2008. One of the first Belgian beers I ever tried, back at Lowlander three or more years ago. I only just realised I never rated it. Rich amber with a firm cream coloured head. Smooth and well balanced for a 5% beer. It’s simple but well executed. Sorts you out nicely.

I first tried this beer while visiting my folks in Antwerp and feel in love with it. Outstanding colour, and excellent finish. Been enjoying the beer here in Toronto, but it isn’t quite as good as the beer they pour in Belgium.
I am excited that the lCBO will now be carrying it so I can enjoy it home.
