Keg at Brewdoge Florence, 25/09/16. Hazed golden orange with a decent off white cap. Nose is orange peel, light spice, sweet bread, faint yeast, grains, hay. Taste comprises lemon rind, straw, trace of yeast, bread, toasted grains, crackers, caramel dribble. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok if a little sweet.

Appearance: hazy straw with three fingers (and growing!) of fluffy white head, excellent retention and chunky lacing. (4/5) Aroma: lemon zest, pale malt, light horseblankety funk. (8/10) Taste: mild sweet, moderate bitter, light funk. (8/10) Medium-light body, lively carbonation, crisp dry and lightly funky bitter finish. (4/5) An excellent Belgian Pale - crisp, bone dry, and lightly funky. Definitely reminiscent of the other three or four Brasserie De La Senne beers I’ve had. I was going to say that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of Trou du Diable character coming through here, but then that got me thinking about what (if any) defining characteristics that brewery has, and all I could come up with was: excellence. I must have had nearly twenty of their beers by now, and I don’t think I’ve rated a single one under 7/10, and they’ve reached 9/10. In particular, they excel at Belgian styles, making this collaboration particularly apt. Really good, and the rude swear word name only makes me like it more. (16/20)

Tap. Moeder Lambic Fontainas, Brussels. Very hazy, deep orange gold. Frothy and blotchy, off white head. Nose has cracker malts. Some orange rind. A little peach flesh. Taste has some bready sweetness, followed by a citrusy bitter edge. Light to medium body. Foamy mouthfeel. Bitterness rises toward the finish. Decent, if a tad dull.

Stine (1760) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - SEP 6, 2016
From bottle of unknown date; fully hazed apricot hued appearance. A firm hit of dry caramel, salted grapefruit and pine resin in the aroma suggest this is more of an American style IPA, and one that is past its expiration date, or close to it. Butterscotch and dried ruby red grapefruit flavor, with biscuity, sweet malt in unexpected quantity; apricot candies and some darker fruit action. Elegant house character of dried flowers, baguette crust and cobwebby must can be seen if squinting. Prickly, overactive carbonation cutting through the mouthfilling texture. Bland and bitter ending, resigned. While it’s a shame to rate a (likely) old bottle, there’s a more compelling argument against this offering. The ever-stylish and singularly excellent vision of Yvan DeBaets is watered down here in service of a lesser idea. That said, it came together alright, of course.

Bottle - Light grains and nice sweetness. Cloudy gold with a rich white head. Light sweetness, touch of bitternes and a nice finish. Decent.
