pours unclear dark brown-reddish with a creamy light beige head, good retention and lacing. roasted and bitter chocolate - quite dense, touch of lactose, torrefied wheat, strong coffee, gentle pine needles, grass, pepper, licorice candies, some red fruitiness, minty and peppery warming alcohol, hint of molasses and maple syrup. average carbonation, light to medium body - oily, semi-sweet yet slightly harsh grassy-spicy-peppery-bitter coffee-resinous finish. enjoying it yet i acknowledge it is a bit old.

Batch 2. Pours a dark reddish brown with a high offwhite (beige, even) head that leaves nice lacing. Shame it isn’t more black, though. Watch the bottle, mine started slowly pushing foam out of the bottle after a few minutes. Nose is of roasted grains and alcohol. Some raisins also? Taste is bitter and a little acrid, gives out ash (surprisingly not disturbing, though) and roasted malt flavors along with some piny hops. Body is medium and carbonation medium-high and just too much overall. This was bottled on 22/01/2014 so maybe it is just too old and was bottled too early, hence the slow gushing/slightly higher than normal carbonation. Anyway, this was good but not crazy good. More American than Belgian, maybe it would be a worthy experiment to try more expressive belgian yeasts? That and getting rid of the ash-y character?

So we were drinking this one in a bar one fine mondaynight and neither of the beerheads was quite impressed with this. Aroma is a bit smoky, with hints of chocolate and a some malt. In the taste not to much hops, more malts and rather dry bitter ending., Nothing to write home about really, but still ok.

Odense Late Summer Post-Munkekonge Whale Spotting Night. Dark brown with a lasting off-white head. Aroma of dark dried fruit and licorice. Sweetish málty flavour with licorice and fruit, grassy hops and a quite bitter finish

33cl bottle bb? (brewed, one-off, 11/2014) courtesy of tderoeck, merci maat. Beautifully enigmatic comic label setting the stage for a confidently curious crossover: labeled both as "Black IPA" and, in smaller type, "bruin bier". Pours a chalky brown anthracite, nice beigish head. Aroma of an exotic roasted porter: charred malts, that DLS house yeast aniseed and earthy mossiness, lemongrass stem and lemon pith: very refined nose. (Tettnang-dryhopped earth & zest here?) Taste is almost as subtle, picking up more charred malts and green moss, that typical ashen quality dampening the more exotic citrus edge and leaving a charred-dry palate, dusted with some chalk. Not a beer for juvenile palates, a lot here flies under the radar and is as stubborn not to fly in your face as the best of Brussels’ own tourist attractions. A mislabeled gem of a bastard beer.
