Pours deep black into a snifter. Creamy head with good retention recedes leaving sheet lacing. Chocolate syrup aromas. Dry dark chocolate and caramel upfront turning to bitter chocolate and espresso in the lasting finish.

(Rating #5237)

In short: A roasted and fruity dark ale with generous fruity hopping.
How: Bottle 300ml, consumed fresh a week after purchase. Bottle had label Kuro Oni which is aliased to Black in Japan.
The look: Extremely dark brown body (very near black) topped by a large beige head with medium retention and leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is very fruity, does not come through as a Black IPA, the fruity hops, dark malts and fruity Belgian yeast esters all combine to create a powerful aroma of dark fruits over burnt almonds. Taste offers a bit more roast, pleasant burnt cereals, some chocolate and still a whole lot of dark fruits. Strong hops essence sensation. Not sure I’m making a wrong assumption because I see this is brewed at De la Senne but I thought this Black IPA was really a roasted dark Belgian ale with a generous hopping. A very good beer, different from the usual North-American style Black IPA. If I was a Black in any country I’d stand outside tanning salons and point and laugh at customers all day.

11.2 ml bottle purchased at Louisville Beer Store. Labeled as “Kuro Oni Black IPA”. The pour is a black mahogany with a foamy three inch khaki head that falls with nice lacing. The aroma is a really interesting mix of spicy pine floral hops and a cocoa, lightly roast malt. Very soft and expressive nose. The taste is earthy and spicy, with a unique nuttiness that I can’t quite describe. Under the earthy hops is the soft cocoa minimally roast / toast malt of the nose. The spice herbal character dries out and carries the finish. The palate is light to medium bodied, softer carbonation and the earthy herbal dry finish. The linger after taste also shows some roast. Really interesting and well crafted beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a large frothy light brown head that slowly faded and left some nice lacing. The nose is very chocolaty with some light roast and burnt caramel, lighter on the citrusy hops than expected. The flavor is really well balanced between the Porter elements of chocolate and coffee and the bright citrusy hops. The sweetness is kept well in check with a little bit of roasted malt on the back end. Medium bodied with a nice dry finish and some lingering bitterness. You’d never guess that this was a Belgian beer in a million years. A pretty god testament to the great work that de la Senne is doing.

11.2oz bottle, from Party Source. Labeled "Kuro Oni". Label indicated that this was made on August 31st, 2012 (.. thanks, Shelton Bros..). Black color, with a big tall light brown head that fills the glass before I can empty the bottle. Leaves good, thicker lace. Spicy, earthy, kind of piney hop aroma. Some chocolate, light on the roast. Smooth, bigger body. Lightly chewier texture, lightly sticky. Lighter carbonation - kind of soft, kind of crisp. Good moderate bitter taste, light sweet, light bit of spice. Enjoyable, smooth, easy drinking black IPA.

330ml bottle from Beer-city.be

Pours pitch black with a hazy white head. Aroma of grainy malts, hints of sweet chocolate, grassy hops and fruits. Taste is grainy, bitter and slightly chocolatey with notes of vanilla, grassy hops and ashes. Finish is slightly roasty and bitter with notes of ashes and chocolate. Feels a bit unbalanced, maybe a bit too burnt and bitter, doesn’t feel very fresh or fruity either.
