Bottle, 33cl, Geers. Pours black with a tanned head. Nose is well balanced between IPA (grapefruit, tropical fruit) & black (roasted coffee). Palate is great, silky, medium to low carbonation. Taste is well balanced between roasted bitterness and hopbitterness. This is only my third black IPA, and my first Belgian BIPA. Itís a great example.

Bottled. Pours deep brown with an average, beige head. Aroma of licorice, roasted malt, coffee, pine and grapefruit. Sweet flavor that ends up dry and nice bitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carb. A very nice, black IPA.

Opaque black color, with a decent, long lasting head. Aromas of breadish malts, hints of coffee and a lot of fruity hops, even a faint whiff of smoke is detectable. Begins with earthy malts, then soon turns bitter, as a lively carbonation washes over the palate. The bitterness is at first defined by coffee and bitter chocolate flavors, which then turns into a hoppy direction. Due to the very metallic carbonation, hop fruitiness turns out very interesting as it evokes both a warming and colder association, coffee bitterness still on the palate. In the finish coffee and malt shine through again, and define the dry, bitter aftertaste. That being said, hoppines is only detectable for a short glance, but it leaves a fruity, refreshing impression on the tongue, as malts and coffee tend to create a fantastic complexity in a medium-bodied beer, heading into a heavier direction. Well balanced with a refreshing, creamy mouthfeel. A beer of opposite tastes, which actually work very well together, noting that the hops donít define this as much as they do in different Black IPAs.

Tasting at Bruceís pad. Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy. Rich dark malts but like the palate, airy. Light roast malt bitterness. Hops are mild pine with a little noble hop like floral bitterness. Trace of tropical fruits. Airy finish with a light bitter linger. Solid CDA.

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Aroma is very earthy, with dry dank hops, and a little toasted breast malt. Flavour is yeasty and hoppy and dank, with notes of roasted malt, earthy hops, and dry unsweetened cocoa. Extremely well-balanced, with a dry palate. Excellent black IPA Belgian style.

Bottle shared in London - thanks, Kenneth! Pours clear, rich brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose has toasty herbal hops, pine, soft roast, hints of melon, citrus. Light to medium sweet flavor with up-front ashy roast, baking cocoa, torched earth, charred meat. Medium bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Light sweet finish, lingering earth, burnt wood and pine, some citrus rind, bittersweet cocoa. Nice.

Chocolatey brown pour; black malt aroma offers cookie dough and brownie, with hops showing needles, citrus; underneath, a pleasant berry acidity.

Firm but understated flavor is lovingly balanced; cocoa, dough, and dark spices are dusted with the sunshine of California style hop flavors.

With its relatively soft texture and subtly dense body this example makes its closing argument. Itís no outstanding experience, but it typifies the style as if itís one that always existed.

Bottle. Dark brown beer, creamy white foam. Hoppy nose with notes of caramel and roasted malts. Easy drinkable, light sweet with heavy bitter aftertaste.
