3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle offered @ home @ comfy sac. De La Senne seems to be putting out my favorite stuff from Belgium of late, so Iíve been sure to pick up everything that is offered by them. This one, while still tasty, has a bit of oxidation and shows a bit of age. Aroma has some burnt sugar, cola, and dark fruits. High carbonation. Raw / caramelized sugar, toffee, a touch smoky / burnt flavor. Tons of dark fruit (plum, fig, raisin). A bit of acidity. Fairly dry finish with some herbal / grassy notes. A little bit of chocolate and cola in the flavor, but this has a ton of dark fruit notes. Kind of fun but it would have been nice to try a bit more fresh. Just a touch of papery notes in it.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 bottle, drunk 2/22/14 as "Zwarte Piet", though I have had Equinox, as well, though quite a while ago.
Mostly clear dark auburn-tinged mahogany body is topped by a very light charred-beige head that is very well-retained.
Boisterous berries and very light cocoa notes in the nose are light and clean, backed by a touch of lightly burnt caramel. A touch of chalkiness and then more blackberry fruitiness as it warms. Medium strength of aroma. Exceptionally clean and free of alcohol. Even a touch of slight, leafy, herbal hops which add a hint of bitterness.
Chocolate, prunes, raisins, vanilla, berries and slight touches of astringent anise all flood the palate, washed about by a light but engaging carbonation and a soft but just grainy enough maltiness. I love that itís not bready and overly chocolatey. Definitely more reserved in flavor than expected, but it really deepens in complexity as it warms and breathes. A good dose of black pepper and more liquorice notes keep it quite dry on the end, but the soft texture and lightly sweet chocolate-like maltiness keep it balanced. Very drinkable. Oddly similar to Taras Boulba in the sense that it is quite straightforward in what itís doing, but exceptionally well-executed in that sense. Really good ester-light example of the style.

330ml bottle. Dark brown, ruby amber highlights, big frothy foamy lasting creme coloured head. Malt nose, dried prunes, some spice and musty yeast. Curious flavour, dry roasted malt, nuts, cheesy umami notes from the yeast. Nice. Medium body, forward carbonation. Short yeasty malty finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Labeled as Zwarte Piet
Pours a very dark brownish black with ruby hues when held up to the light, the head is light tan, large and leaves some spotty lacing on the glass.
The aroma is sort of roasty with some clean laundry & some light ashiness. Certainly pleasant smelling, but very simple & straight forward.
The flavor is roasty with very light dark fruit notes and a good dosing of leafy happiness. I like the level of bitterness here which is tending to be slightly heavier on hop bitterness but isnít without some complimentary dark roasted malt bitterness. Itís got come cocoa powder and to a lesser degree some straight up dark chocolate. There are some light fruity notes, but theyíre fleeting... itís sort of an earthy not-so-sweet berry fruit... mulberry is the best real life example I can think of.
The beer drinks extraordinarily easily, it doesnít let on that itís a strong beer at all, the mouthfeel carries the bitterness perfectly... like with many of the De La Senne beers, I could drink a good whole bunch of this stuff.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle bought @ Etre. Pours very dark reddish brown with a huge frothy mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving some trace on the glass. smell is sweet and phenolic with roasted malts, baked pears, moist soil, moist wood, hay, lemon zest, ginger and lemon grass. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter and phenolic with heavily roasted malts, black pepper corns, baked pears, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, charred wood, moist soil, hay, pine needles, lemon zest, salty liquorice candy and resin. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny roasted astringent and medium bodied. finish is bitter and phenolic with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, lemon zest, black pepper corns, ginger, hay and resinous wood. Blackface robot? WTF!? Not one of their better offerings...

February 4, 2014. 330mL bottle at WVRST. Zwarte Piet on the label. Very dark beer. Light head. Nice lacing. Lingering bitterness while drinking. Roasted malt in the aroma. Pretty good, but not my favourite from De la Senne. They definitely have some of the more interesting labels.
