On tap at Moeder Fontainas, as Zwarte Piet. Black in colour, with a hint of cola in the depths, and a thick white head. Wow is this almost something like a stout or porter, with a boozy roasted malt character but also a robust hop finish. More like a British microbrew than a Belgian ale to me.

Black body with a huge foamy brown head. Malty, cocoa and vanilla on the nose give room to notes of warm wooden cupboard. Clean and smooth mouthfeel with roasted coffee and chocolate flavors. Suiting alco warmth and a pungent malt base. Long pleasant finish.

Bottle... Pours cloudy and brown with an occasional flash of burnt-orange and no head. The nose is nutty, toasty and lightly funky. Medium-bodied with modest carbonation. There are traces of caramel, cocoa and brown sugar here. Otherwise, this brew offers big roasty bitterness in both the flavor and burnt, lingering finish. Bottle courtesy of 50belair!

29/03/2014 Brasserie 4.20 (tap). Vintage 2008. Ambrata carica-marrone, schiuma praticamente assente. Al naso nettissima ossidazione, sentori di muffa, stantio, caramello, alcol. In bocca Ť vuota, piatta, ha perso corpo nel tempo, una nota di cioccolato (un poí annacquata). Corpo medio, carbonazione soft. Troppo tempo in cantina, era andata...

Bottle offered @ home @ comfy sac. De La Senne seems to be putting out my favorite stuff from Belgium of late, so Iíve been sure to pick up everything that is offered by them. This one, while still tasty, has a bit of oxidation and shows a bit of age. Aroma has some burnt sugar, cola, and dark fruits. High carbonation. Raw / caramelized sugar, toffee, a touch smoky / burnt flavor. Tons of dark fruit (plum, fig, raisin). A bit of acidity. Fairly dry finish with some herbal / grassy notes. A little bit of chocolate and cola in the flavor, but this has a ton of dark fruit notes. Kind of fun but it would have been nice to try a bit more fresh. Just a touch of papery notes in it.

2013 bottle, drunk 2/22/14 as "Zwarte Piet", though I have had Equinox, as well, though quite a while ago.
Mostly clear dark auburn-tinged mahogany body is topped by a very light charred-beige head that is very well-retained.
Boisterous berries and very light cocoa notes in the nose are light and clean, backed by a touch of lightly burnt caramel. A touch of chalkiness and then more blackberry fruitiness as it warms. Medium strength of aroma. Exceptionally clean and free of alcohol. Even a touch of slight, leafy, herbal hops which add a hint of bitterness.
Chocolate, prunes, raisins, vanilla, berries and slight touches of astringent anise all flood the palate, washed about by a light but engaging carbonation and a soft but just grainy enough maltiness. I love that itís not bready and overly chocolatey. Definitely more reserved in flavor than expected, but it really deepens in complexity as it warms and breathes. A good dose of black pepper and more liquorice notes keep it quite dry on the end, but the soft texture and lightly sweet chocolate-like maltiness keep it balanced. Very drinkable. Oddly similar to Taras Boulba in the sense that it is quite straightforward in what itís doing, but exceptionally well-executed in that sense. Really good ester-light example of the style.

330ml bottle. Dark brown, ruby amber highlights, big frothy foamy lasting creme coloured head. Malt nose, dried prunes, some spice and musty yeast. Curious flavour, dry roasted malt, nuts, cheesy umami notes from the yeast. Nice. Medium body, forward carbonation. Short yeasty malty finish.
