3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Senne’s ’wooden leg’, tasted from tap; a tripel with thick, densely moussy, thickly sticking, eggshell white head and cloudy yellow blonde colour. Aroma of dried apricot, white pepper, some baked banana, bitter honey, green apple peel, freshly cut grass, flowers and white bread. Crisp onset, fruity but only very restrainedly sweetish with medium strong fizz, some citrus peel freshness, soft grainy and lightly bready malt body, very dry, leading to a deep, earthy, leafy, herbal hop bitterness, quite strong and a bit tonic-like, with retronasal floral aromas, lasting longer than average for the style; alcohol remains perfectly hidden. Like most of Senne’s beers, this seems to be a reaction against the sweeter style of more ’commercial’ tripels populating the Belgian beer landscape; it bears Senne’s quality stamp for sure and acts very appetizing in the mouth due to its outspoken dryness and bitterness. In that sense perhaps a somewhat atypical, but in any case very accomplished tripel.

Rather simple when aroma and taste are concerned. Smooth and pleasant in the mouth. Could drink a sea of it without noticing. That must lead to a hell of a hangover.

Pours a clear yellow gold, colour doesn’t change much just gets foggier with the sediment. Light pearly carbonation.
The characteristic hoppy de la senne aroma like a sunny autumn day, touch of honey, sweet malt, and somewhere deep a sweet smell that oddly reminds me of happy summers at the open swmmingpool where I grew up some 30 years ago.
I’m not one for revolutions, nothing but missery from them, but this one I support whole heartedly: Away with the boring triples! No more banana and bubblegum esters! This is a real triple treat for me. Nice hoppy bitterness, slight touch of aniseed, vague note of pear mingled with malt sweetness through that bitter, tiny wave of umami, silty edge in the end, straight whisked away again by that lovely subtle duo of bitter and sweet. Light oily mouthfeel with just enough carbonation, and not so bitter that it slaps your mouth bone-dry, but leaves some salivation to order the next one...
They make some lovely beers at de la Senne, whatever prosthetic limb they might screw on for the day!
