Taras Boulba is the perfect session beer — loaded with complex yeast flavors, hopped to perfection, and as drinkable as any beer you’ve ever tried. At 4.5% alcohol, it’s built for drinkability — we suggest buying it by the case.

You’re no doubt wondering where the name comes from and what the hell the foreign text says. It’s all been explained to us by the brewers, but we’re still not entirely clear about it. What we can understand is that a young Flemish man has gone and married a French-speaking Wallonian girl, and his father, Taras Boulba, is very angry. (Smeirlap means ‘fool’ in a bizarre local dialect, which combines Flemish and French, somehow.)

This is all a bastardization of the original story by Gogol, whose protagonist was Ukrainian (Zaporozhian Cossack, specifically), and a Protestant. His son marries a Polish girl, a Catholic, during the religious war between the two countries in the 1600s, and the Ukrainian father simply kills his son to eliminate the shame.

From the Bier Tempel in Brugge. Aroma is mild - just the slightest hint of dry pasta. The easing in of the hops to the flavor is impressive and consistent. The finishing touch is a little bit of tongue dancing - spritz. A low ABV hoppy beer with a touch of Belgian yeast is welcome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Supposed to be belgian IPA, but not much from belgian notes. The beer is citrusy though, light and very well hopped for bitterness. Decent pale ale.

Keg at Cafe Beermoth, Manchester. A slightly hazy straw colour with a foamy white head. Aroma of lemon peel, grape, straw, slight cereal malts, a little vanilla, a hint of yeast and subtle grass. Taste of lemon, grape, straw, some cereal malts, slight yeast, a hint of mineral and subtle grass. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A crisp, dry, grassy bitterness in the finish. A clean, crisp and refreshing Belgian ale, like a lager/saison hybrid. Good

Tap into a wineglass showing lightly filtered yellow with 2 fingers of clean white foam. The nose shows clean hops and tart lemon. The palate is light bodied with smooth carbonation. Drinks like a reverse pilsner, clear, clean, and crisp bitterness up front but the finish and linger shows light bready malts. Strange but not bad.
