3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 24, 2011 Nicely lacing white head covers the hazy golden hue. Gentle pils malt is drowned under highly yeasty emanations of angel cake, sweet dough, picky lemony hops and light DMS. Simple flavour profile, dms-y and hop forward, floral saaz with spicy yeast. Light bodied, fair carbonation. A subpar Belgian ale.
Having tried a 330mL bottle with the coloured label, I found it much more pleasant. A spot on Farmhouse ale with lots of green character, so much that it feels vegetal amongst these herbal, grassy traits. It deserved far more than the 2.8 I initially gave it, but it was not quite to my tastes. The green was taking a lot of room and hampered a bit the fresh pils malt character and flowery nuances I generally like in farmhouse ales. Still bumping to 3.6.
A more recent try in 2011 was a solid hoppy Belgian ale, well structured and generously bitter with again a certain green aspect and perhaps more grainines than I’d hope for in a Pils malt focused ale, but solid all around, although it feels less refreshing than it should for a 5.5% ale - I even caught some alcohol vapours. Nevertheless, bumping it up from 3.6 to 3.7.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A fully lasting large creamy white head tops up a clear medium yellow body. Moderate lacing. Few thin particles. Few medium bubbles. Aroma presents malt being medium biscuity /hay (pils-like) while hops are barely noticeable ... Yeast character is light DMS. Also, there are faint evocations of salt. Initial flavor is medium pils-like while development shows off residual sugar, moderate bready. Finish is short . Light to medium body... oily texture... Soft carbonation...

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: FEB 10, 2011 Newer, 330-ml bottles (August 2008 to today):
I don’t know what happened in the last two years or so at this brewery, but this bottle I am having now is so much better than the first try. Don’t know if it’s a case of freshness, of recipe reformulation, or of a brewer/equipment change, but the new Zinne Bir is simply fantastic. Hoppy (herbal, citrusy, spicy, minty), bubbly, überdrinkable, with a nice pils malt backbone and doughy yeast profile.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle, more available: Pours a cloudy orange, honey-ish amber hue. Perfect foamy off white head, mostly lasting, leaving sheets of rocky lace, very nice indeed. Grassy nose, citrus, hay, pear, apricot, honey, apple, ’sweat’, yeast aromas. Pleasant mouthfeel, nicely carbonated, light to medium body. Grainy, faintly sweaty, musty, dusty, earthen, herbal, grassy notes, dry, somewhat thin character. Interesting and enjoyable to say the least, yet not quite spectacular. I really enjoyed the winter though. Ill have to try them both again. Terd Ferguson, its your birthday.
