UPDATED: JUL 16, 2016 The tripel in this Lelie series, bottle from a Prik & Tik in Zele. Like the Pater, this one intends to recreate an old Belgian tripel from a bygone era - a blast from the past, so to speak. Slow gusher but manageable. Medium thick, moussy, off-white head slowly dissolving from the middle, peach blonde colour with golden hue, lightly hazy, with a suspension of dead yeast and proteins throughout, lending it an almost ’bouillon’-like appearance. Rather weak aroma of old apple, wet and old cardboard (even very old books), soft paprika, onsetting oxidation, peach, bread crust, dry jute cloth, fried egg, diluted yellow tea, dried banana, young ’jenever’, dry earth, hay, old cheese, dried apricot, ripe gooseberry, dried ginger, barbecued chicken, very old white pepper. Fruity onset, hints of peach, banana and unripe pear, only very subduedly sweetish and softly sourish with a soft bittering edge from the start, spritzy carbo with further souring and minerally effects, vaguely bready and somewhat grainy malt middle, offering not much of a background for the rest and suffering a bit from the sharp carbonation while a certain fruitiness continues and yeasty spice notes (cloves, pepper, dried ginger) appear towards the end; finishes dryish but much in the same way as it began, i.e. lacking sweetness and rotundity, yet gaining a hayish and softly spicy hop bitterishness - which offers some balance against the malt and fruit character. Ends in wryness of ’jenever’-like alcohol adding further drought but not in a very enjoyable way; luckily some yeasty ’breadiness’ and powderiness soften this effect, especially after adding the yeast sediment. Dusty, messy, almost coming across as amateuristic: this is disappointing, even if the bottle is probably too old already (despite the label saying best before December 2016) or has been kept in anything but favorable circumstances. The proteins yield an unpleasant fried chicken-like aroma, there is onsetting but undeniable oxidation which does not make things any better, and the suspension of dead things does not make it look attractive, but still I can imagine this being quite alright (yet doubtlessly a bit boring) when young, though it would certainly have been way too alcoholic back then as well. The intentions are good, but this to me is not very pleasant and not suitable for ageing even before it hits its own BBD. Somewhat disappointed, actually.

Pourquoi la Schelde s’est-elle lancée dans la résurrection d’une bière disparue en 1952 ?? Même si c’est in memoriam, on prend toujours des risques dans ce genre d’aventure … Brasserie, rappelons-le, créée en 1907 à Vosselaer près de Turnhout, époque où les goûts n’étaient pas du tout ce qu’ils sont actuellement. Définie comme une « ambrée houblonnée » par le brasseur, elle est bien sûr classée sans distinction par ratebeer comme une belgian strong … Quand la facilité nous tient !! Niveau abv de 8,5 %. Couleur ambre moyen, dont le brillant est anéanti par beaucoup de levure granuleuse en suspension. Ce n’est pas spécialement joli… Bulles fines en colonnes droites. Mousse blanc cassé, assez fine, stable à 4 m. Arômes de malt, avoine, pain gris, houblon, pointe de candi. 1ère bouche souple sur malt, épices, malt à whisky. Arrière-bouche assez pointue, avec beaucoup d’épice. 2ème avec une épice très curieuse, un peu liquoreuse. Arrière-bouche envahissante, mais sans équilibre. 3ème bouche un peu divagante. Arrière-bouche ente épice et houblon, mais pas très heureuse. Longueur un rien plus intégrée, avec des nuances valables. Jambes fines, groupées. Levure très légère, douce, ligne faible. Alcool bien, mais il n’arrive pas à maîtriser son sujet. Finale pas à la hauteur. CONCLUSION : in memoriam, mais on s’arrête assez vite après cela. Dont acte ...

----Best before december 2014 . Drank 31st december 2014 . BAM !!! -------- bottle . Pours hazy blonde , with small , completely unseperateable floaters . Small white head. Smell is hoppy bitterness , sharp grains . Pretty average tripel scent . Taste is also a one-of-a-dozen tripel . Banana-yeastyness, malty backbone, sugary dryness, tad sweet , some bitter aspects .

gouden/geel met minimale witte kraag, waarbij de sinaasappelschilletjes en het gist vrolijk in het glas rond dansen. aroma komt floraal over tezamen met sinaasappel/mandarijntjes, koriander. smaken zijn matig zoet, matig bitter, normale sterkte, redelijk fruitig van sinaasappel, citrus, met een koriander kruidigheid, gist en wat exotische fruiten. medium body, glad van textuur, lage co2, afdronk is een beetje droog.

Slightly hazy light amber golden colour, white head. Aroma of banana, malts, yeast, spices and candy sugar. Sweet flavour, malts, spices. Quite alcoholic. Sweet finish, banana yeast, light cloves. It?s a Belgian blonde alright. (draught @ Café Onder de Lindekens, Vosselaar)

Bottle. Honey, medium-sweet malt, grapefruit, and alc. fumes. Thin hazy medium straw color. Sharp fruit initial: peaches and light grapefruit / yeast bite and then moderate fruit sweetness, along with some oxidation. Medium body. Some decent flavors. Doesn’t hide the alcohol well. Nice enough.

Bottle, 8.5% about 450 yen from Sugaya. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a cloudy dark gold with potent fruity belgian yeasty aroma with biscuit, cream, plum notes. Nice flavor! Light but very effervescent carbonation, sweet malts, vanilla, hints of candied fruits. The finish has a touch of a grainy malt sweetness though. Overall a pretty good beer. Drunk from a St-Feuillien chalice type glass...
