75cl corked and caged bottle from eaglefan538. Bottle number 652 of 708 75cl bottles. Brewed on 16 January 2008, bottled on 19 February, 2008. I have been wanting to try this since I first read about Ron Pattinson’s intention to recreate it. Bottle opens with a loud pop. Pour is mostly clear orange ruby brown with a noisy 2 inch beige head. Frothy bubbles crackle and fall with only spotty lacing. Aroma of milky stale coffee roastiness. The coffee is soft, and more inviting then the term "stale coffee" would suggest. Some pine bitterness present as well. Taste is the roast malt coffee, again very much in the stale coffee vein, this time only slightly more inviting as that term implies. Behind the coffee is an interesting bright acidic bitterness, almost like sour cherry dark chocolate. It spiced things up nicely towards the finish. Also present is spruce pine bitterness. Touch of earthy tobacco notes. After that died down, the coffee returned to the finish and lingered nicely. Quite complex in its flavors. Palate has nice, lively carbonation and is smooth light-medium bodied. This was a really easy drinking beer. Fun beer to try, thanks for all of your effort Mr. Pattinson.

Bottled@Monks Cafe, Wallingatan, Stockholm. Deep brown/black colour, small beige head. Aroma is licorice, mild alcohol, vanilla and some dark dry fruity notes as well. Flavour is coffee, roasted malts, licorice and a lot of maltyness. Some slight chocolate and vanilla in the aftertaste. Very pleasant.

Sampling at Monks with 6 of the De Molen beers with brewmaster Menno. Thick with lasting foam. Fruity aroma with some chocolats but not much for a porter. Taste of dark chocolat with a rather small bitterness (EBU=34.7).

Bottle #143, brewed on 16 January 2008, and bottled on 19 February 2008. Pours a large fizzy head with poor retention, virtually no lacing, transparent, visible carbonation, and an orange brown hue. A lot going on with the aroma as it consists of malt, chocolate, roasty, licorice, coffee, vanilla notes, dark dried fruits, and toasty. Nice! The flavor is just as busy as the aroma - lightly bitter, dark dried fruits, chocolate, malt, roasty, burnt, toasty, vanilla, licorice, and a dry finish. Nice! A tingly mouthfeel and medium in body. A lot going on with this beer which in this case was a nicely brewed porter! Hats off to the brewer! Nicely balanced, easy to drink, nothing is over-the-top, worthy of a try, and a beer that I definitely would like to have again.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Wallingatan, Stockholm) Very dark brown colour, almost black. Frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with dark fruit, coffee, prunes and hints of yeast. Malty, roasted taste with notes of coffee, dark fruit, prunes, raisins and hints of blueberries. Spicy finish with a balanced cocoa bitterness and hints of yeast. Medium body, fairly dry. Nice porter with lots of fruit and yeasty leanings in the Belgian direction.

Bottle at chris o’s teabag for 2009 tasting. Alround rating: A very hoppy porter, more of a dark premium bitter i would have thought, fairly tasty stuff all the same.

Bottled at Monks café, Wallingatan, Stockholm. Pours out in a hazy ruby brown colour with a small frothy off-white head. Chocolate chips, roasted malts, coffee and mild floral and peppery hops. Medium-bodied with notes of whipped chocolate cream, nuts, toasted grains and grass. Medium bitter and lightly yeasty finish of roasted malts, milky chocolate, minerals and grass.

A Mes rate. Bottle at Chris O’s pre NYE tasting. Dark cloudy brown with a decent beige head. Gorgeous fruity aroma with some good earthy notes and some lovely creamy alcohol. Typical De Molen flavour. Great chocolate notes with a massive hit of excellent hoppy bitterness. Slight soap hints from the alcohol but it’s really not a bad thing. Straight forward but incredibly enjoyable. De Molen can do nothing wrong for me. Hats off to Menno.
