Rating #7000, 9th Anniversary on Ratebeer! 750mL bottle. Poured near black with a tight-bubbled toasted dark brown head. The aroma picked up burnt chocolates, licorice, cane sugar, and a touch of soy.. smoky whiskey was very nice on the back of the nose. The flavor opened with tangy, greener coffee and woody notes, with buttered cocoa, bakerís chocolate, licorice, and a bit of molasses following.. sharper whiskey laced throughout.. burnt cocoa, coffee, and Madeira on the long, warm, lightly tangy finish. Heavy-bodied with smooth, rolling carbonation on the palate.. buttery feel on the middle.. sharp at times on the edges, mostly barrel-related.. overall a good feel and tasty brew, but it wasnít as cohesive as I expected.

750 ml bottle - sampled at Jeffoís place, next to the "straight" BD. Overall less impressive than the Original, there was something íoff" in both aroma and taste. Aftertaste was slight hoppier.

Bottle, 01/11/2014. Pours thick black, dense frothy mocha tan head which fades down to a nice crema on the suface, medium ring of lacing around the glass. Aroma is earthy, fresh pressed cocoa and slightly acidic coffee, fresh tobacco, fruity chocolate with vanilla, mild whiskey, wood. Taste sweet and fruity up front, dark chocolate, hint of that coffee from the nose, dry woody roast, moderate bitterness building in intensity towards the finish, some char in the aftertaste. Medium thick palate, very creamy. Awesome, glad to have finally tried this one, held up well.

The last beer of 2013 and the first of 2014. My most highly anticipated bottle from the cellar, so Iím very glad to crack it and celebrate the new year! Regular Black Damnation didnít fare too well on 750s: it turned into a yeasty brown mush. This one was aged on Anchor Steam Old Portrero Single Malt American whiskey. Letís see how it is! It pours a beautiful jet black with brown hues. Good head retention, leaves a dark brown ring around the glass. The aroma is mostly fruity whiskey notes. You get some vanilla and butterscotch, but mostly sherry and something herbal. Slight roasted malts coming through, but not very much. The smell is dominated by an interesting herbal quality. Very unique and unlike anything Iíve had before. The malts do come through more in the taste. The onset is a bitterness thatís definitely surprising from a beer of this age (4-5 years). Fruity, yet roasty at the same time. The middle of the palate leans more towards that herbal quality, with some booze coming through. The finish is mostly clean and malty bitterness. The palate is light, yet beefy. Enough carbonation makes for a dangerously drinkable 13% beer, but it mellows on the tongue to be guzzled down with ease. Lovely. Letís just face the fact this review was never going to be objective. These are my two favorite breweries and itís my most highly anticipated out of all their beers. The only thing I was vaguely frightened about, is that this might have turned into a yeast mush as well, which it didnít. Thanked be the heavens. This is one of the most unique stouts Iíve ever had, and - dare I say - one of the best.
