(33 cl bottle in wine glass.) Pours clear dark brown with a thin yellowish head that fades rather fast into a soapy foam. Aroma is watery with a distinctly peated scent. Mouthfeel is oily and rather thin with peat and a not so bitter nor roasted porter foundation. I bet this would pair well with a lot of foods. Too bad I have only this bottle and just ate!

Marrón casi negra. Sin espuma. Aroma intenso, a bacon y humo.

Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Smokey nose, peaty, quite phenolic, and alcohol fumes. Medium dark reddish brown prune juice-like color. Sweet initial, with rich malt, smokey and roasty, light soy sauce, bit of licorice, and ash. Thin-medium body, somewhat oily, and very low carbonation. Very nice. Peaty stuff can go too far, but this one maintains its sanity.

33cl bottle, shared with a friend (1 IV 2016). Aggressive smoked imperial stout with huge bacon and even cigarette features. The beer’s tan is black with white collar on top. The mouthfeel is medium sweet, bitter and infused with lots of ham and bacon - yet not overpowered as a Rauchbier often is. You can depict the smoked wheaty, almost corny notes in there. The carbonation is soft and pleasant. The finish is peaty, spiritlike. This surely is heavy sensation, one for the lovers of bitterish smoked beers.

Alengrin (4076) - BELGIUM - MAR 28, 2016
Hybrid of imperial stout and Rauchbier, bottle of almost exactly one year old. Milky, moussy, pale yellowish beige, irregular head over a very dark purple brown beer with wine red hue, still completely translucent even in its core (under bright light), hazy. Aroma immediately shouts ’Rauchbier’, as smoked herring, cured bacon and charcoal hit the nostrils; after this smoke assault settles down a bit, I get hints of caramel, hazelnut, roses, peated whisky, damp kitchen towel, strong ’haemoglobin’ iron, liquorish, fudge, pipe tobacco, black pepper, rum-soaked raisins, dry tree leaves, dried plums, burnt sugar, toasted brown bread, sherry, fresh paint - so many things keep popping up one after another that I could sniff this bouquet for hours on end. In the mouth, this impressive beer kicks off with restrained, but emphatic candied fig-like sweetness and some dry banana, surrounded by a deep beefy umami flavor (even black olive) and a thin salty edge (dried seaweed); the sweetness somehow breaks through this and keeps forming a thin, caramelly, maple syrup-like and candyish and even very slightly cloying line connecting onset to finish. In the meantime, in a softly carbonated, velvety, ’fatty’ physical environment, a thick layer of caramelly, nutty and toasted malts is to be digested, building a tall structure which bears retronasal peat, smoked herring, roasted peanuts, cocoa beans and coffee grounds; ends in a perfect bittersweetness adorned with smoky ’umaminess’, deeply situated earthy and peppery hop bitterness and a whisky-like alcohol glow, warming up the whole thing and balancing on the brink of astringency, warning you to ingest this monumental beer with little sips. As I said many times before here and will continue to do, De Molen’s concoctions may not always be perfect in terms of mouthfeel, aroma, flavor or even sheer balance, but I don’t care, each and every one of their beers is a fully staged play on its own. This one again takes me through a whole adventure of flavors: it is not just smoky and peated, like many similar beers from other breweries often are, there is a whole array of other flavors to discover here. I am deeply in love with this brewery.

Biroholik (613) - Sosnowiec, Poland, POLAND - MAR 26, 2016
Ekstrakt: 18% wag.
Chmiele: Sladek (CZ)
Kolor: Brązowy. Pod światło piwo jest klarowne. Minimalne czerwono-rubinowe refleksy.
Beztrosko pijalne i łatwo przyswajalne. Miodzio!
Wysycenie: Niskie.
Ah ten De Molen! Czy oni miewają czasem gorsze dni? Kolejne piwo z ich stajni i kolejny rasowy koń! Idelany balans między cechami wędzonymi, a piwem bazowym. Wędzonka nie przykrywa całości. Również torfowe detale, chociaż intensywne, to świetnie współgrają z charakterem Stouta. Słodka czekolada i minimalna paloność dopieszczają kompozycję. Pyszny wyrób i wybór!
