Aroma of both german and scottish smoke malt. The flavour is similar. Good balance. A little over carbonated.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 32B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 06/12/13. AROMA: predominant smoked aroma with notes of burnt rubber. very faint dark chocolate notes. APPEARANCE: dark color with ruby highlights. very thin light brown head with poor retention. TASTE: nice blend of burnt wood, smoke, some coffee and an overall semi-sweet background. low bitterness with an almost sweet finish. PALATE: medium-low body with low carbonation. OVERALL: a smoked stout with more complex and balanced flavour than the aroma, and with very low carbonation.

keg at le fleur du malt, Lyon
deep cacao brown with fluffy dark beige head. fairly smokey ashen bonfire notes on nose. quite astringent smokiness at first with slightly metallic meaty notes. As more is consumed the flavours round out better with some tcp, bacon, ash, leather and toasted barley. It doesn’t quite have the body of the fantastic rauchbiers and thus feels a little uncomplex. Carbonation also on the low side. interesting rather than exciting or pleasurable.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’ place. Thanks Stas&Max. Black with a tan head. Straw and phenol and lots of peat and some mud and salt in the nose, peat, phenol and seaweed taste. Full body, no carbonation, long, smoky finish.

Rauchbier is niet mijn bier. Ruikt naar mijn bbq en smaakt naar verbrand hout. Geen favoriet.

0,33 l bottle from EDEKA Mohr, bottled on 25/6/2014, 8.2% abv. Clear, very dark red to black with a thin, soapy, almost stable, tan head. Rich, fruity-smoky aroma of plums, raisins, smoked ham, peat, dark chocolate and coffee. Sweetish, fruity-smoky taste of plums, raisins and a bit of smoked ham, followed by dark chocolate and coffee. Very long, intensely peaty and just slightly bitter finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, flat. Another good stout from De Molen. Quite complex with different flavours appearing one after another and still absolutely round.
