2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - JUL 31, 2009
Chestnut-hued obsidian. Creamy and tight off-beige head. Plasticlike phenols, stewed plums, and alcohol and permeate the nose with lighter shades of burnt toffee and scorched malt hulls. Soft and viscous on the tongue. Tacky and weighty, initially, with a surge of tangy molasses and liquefied licorice. Metallic and irony, with a medicinal sharpness which greatly hampers the body with too much weight before clashing with the brash phenols. Extremely brash and plasticlike, throughout. Dab of espresso and well-defined crisp roast attempt to impart some brightness as well as dryness, but entirely succumb to the pervasive plastic, alcohol, and overbearing medicine-steeped fruit character. Finishes off-putting in its raspy sweet and tart blend of medicine, molasses, stewed plums and plastic. Dry espresso and bitter chocolate remain submerged beneath the tacky goo. The residual weight is not only oppressive here, but obliterates virtually all malt subtleties. Boozy, plastic-laden, seemingly unfinished. Quite flawed.

12oz bottle shared by Sean. Thanks man... Pours a deeper mahogany hue with reddish tones at the edges and topped with a wispy light beige head... Deeper tootsie roll semi-sweet fudge, a little peaty with light iodine. Smoothened deeper mature flavor... Flavors are aged to some degree with light char and bittersweet chocolate. Body has thinned out a bit but flavor profile is solid.

330ml bottle at l’Autre Oeil.
The beer has a dark black and oily robe, and is making lots of head, so much I keep having to drink it while reviewing. Carbonation in mine is extremely high. Aroma roasted malts, nuts, vanilla and caramel. This full body beer has a sweet taste and lightly bitter. Excellent beer!

11.2zo bottle poured into snifter. Super black color with a soft creamy head. Light malty flavor with hints of coffee, chocolate malt, vanilla bean and fudge. ABV is masked very well here. Great tasting beer!

Huge thanks to GT2 for this bottle!! Oily black pour, no head. Nose holds beautiful peaty wood, liqueur, rich chocolate truffle filling, with a touch of that ashy base beer at the finish. Truly superb.

dark brown, thinnest tan small bubbled ring that dies fast. Nose and flavor similar with heavy ash and roast, burnt brownie, oppressive residuals. Thin and sticky, one-sided, the only

330mL thanks to anders37. Pours essentially flat, deep ruby. No head. Nose is quite impressive: super intense cherry dark chocolate, mild booze, definitely on the sweet side. But very different nose than normal H&V. Taste is a bit sweet, slightly ashy, syrupy, some red apple, and lots of coffee liquor. Just too sticky and sugary for me. Finish is drier and powdery. A bit headache inducing. Aesthetics wise it is lacking.

Bottle courtesy of GT2, thanks! Black and headless. Aroma of chocolate covered caramel candy. Taste is similar with vanilla and brandy. Nice stuff.

Thanks GT2! Straight black pour with no head. Peat and earthen chocolate lead to huge creamy mocha and ganache. Uber thick rich palate with a creamy texture and sweet finish.

(Bottled, rated 2011-11-26) Almost black with no head. Softly licoricey nose with vanilla and roasted maltiness. Lots of malt, vanilla and licorice in the flavor, with sweet coffee and balanced roasted bitterness. Some tannins from the barrel add complexity. Quite full body, almost no CO2, sticky but not cloying. This is a beer you run into maybe once a year - excellent stuff!
