Drank on tap (10 oz) at Le Cheval Blanc for the second Big Tuesday of Cheval Blanc’s 25th anniversary, April 10, 2012. Very dark brown, thin head. Aroma of malted barley slightly smoky, nutty notes. Taste of semi sweet barley and nuts, dry chocolate notes, sweet aftertaste. A good simple porter!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at Dan’s. Pours a cola black. Aroma is coffee, malty, oaky, a little smokey. Taste is a bit treacley, with coffee grain, peaty maltness and a bit of lavender too. Decent finish, a touch watery mouthfeel but still flavourful. Nice one.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Kris Wines. Pours very dark with orangey tan hint, and no head. Smell was heavily roasted malt and hint of creaminess. Taste is strong (very powerful for 5.1%), bitter roast and a little sweetish cream. Slightly oily palate. Finish is long and bitter with faint chocolate character. A nice beer, more of a beer at home than a porter for the pub though.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours no foam, no carbonation, strange appearance. Maybe the bottle fermentation did not take place...
Color is red. Nose is very neutral.
First impression is like a classic porter and finally this is exactly what you should expect from a porter. I already drunk similar ones from draft in south of England, not so carbonated but well balanced. Roasted malt flavour, subtle acidity, nice bitterness, dry finish ... a Porter.

Not my favorite by De Molen, but a typical strong offering. Rich and roasted character. Some chocolate aroma and a sweet taste throughout.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
330ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Quite lively on the pour giving a large, dense & rocky, lasting orange-hued tan head topping off a near opaque burgundy coloured body. There are plenty of sweet & sour red & dark berry notes to the aroma with background touches of roasted malt, coffee & chocolate. It’s the coffee & roasted malt qualities that take the fore on the palate, however, yet retaining elements of the berry character. Quite a dry & bitter malt base. Finished with a lingering roasty, ashy, coffee bitterness. Medium body, firm, structured & fairly crisp & spritzy in the mouth.
