Benzai (8986) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - DEC 27, 2012
75cl bottle [from trade with Bierkoning] shared with Dutchdrebus. Huge fairly quickly diminishing beige head on top of a dark red colored beer. Smell malts, hops and some fruityness slightly tending to sweetness. Taste malts, slightly caramel, hops, alcohol, some fruityness. Absolutely totally impressed with this beer, which has been retired for years now! Absolutely impressive. Medium to full body and carbonation.

Bottle @ joes thx to benzai. Hazy ruby colour with a big off-white head. Smells barley wine, hops, pine, sweet. Tastes bitter, hoppy, grapefruit, sweet, red fruits, caramel.. This beer is about 4 years old? The taste is so well preserved. Very cool share by benzai. Medium to full body, great carbo.

So how does a dark double IPA survive a couple of years? Impressive, that is how. Sure, its dark amber body isn’t supported by much of a head, but the what must have been boatloads of hops are still in here, giving the spicy and now well developed body a great taste fullness. Foresty and tabacco base is enhanced by the grapefruit hops of which the essence still remains. An example of how hops and classy malts can hold up and improve. Delicious. (Bottle many thanks to Menno and John)

330ml bottle (BierKompass.de)
Glorious hoppy aroma, sharp on pouring, mellower later, roaster as it warms. Deep red, persistent tight tan head. Lovely full palate. Spicy retronasals. Mellow roast, deeply burnt, but so mellow and no harshness. Sweet spicy bite, nice noble bitter tingle. Finish also has a great burnt, but mellow, hum. not really saying 10.8% to me. Another great beer from Menno!

Thanks to someone for sharing at bu11zeye’s 10,000th rating tasting. The beer pours a brownish-amber color with a few white bubbles but no real head. The aroma has a lot of toffee and alcohol in it, but there is also a little bit of cherry. The flavor is similar. The toffee is complimented by some tobacco and leather notes, as well as some cherries and orange citrus. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

BMan1113VR (7874) - Los Angeles, California, USA - MAY 31, 2012
Bottle number 159 from the February 2009 bottling thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a hazed amber hued body with a fading white head. Aromas are of brandy, bready, raisins, caramel, cereal and melanoidins. Some orange, citrus and resin. Flavors are bitter, with some sweetness, iced tea, brandy, orange schnapps and caramel. Lower carbonation, medium bodied, bitter duration and warming. Not sure how I would have liked this fresh. Not even remotely close to a DIPA any more, but decent as an American Strong or Barley Wine.
