worldbeertaste (1709) - West Midlands, ENGLAND - OCT 9, 2013
Bottle from April 2009, opened in October 2013. 4.5 years old. Deep dark brown with a thin, ring of a head that disappears. Non lacy, tan. Deep smell of hops with strong earthy tones. Flowers, raisin, dusty hops, cloves, pecans, peach and honeysuckle. Sort of herbal.medium oily dry body with soft carbonation. Deep complex malts. Tastes of caramel, pepper, strawberries, barley, strong ginger notes, and clear herbal notes. The sweetness is masked by dust. Raisins. Finishes with yeast, caramel, and grassy. Incredibly intense IPA that is a bit hard to drink as it is very bitter. Sort of like a barley wine that’s seriously over hopped. Malty hoppy goodness but a bit too much. Sipping.

To celebrate today’s star for a day (shivandragon) I’ve just opened a vintage 2009 Heil & Zegen. It poors a very dark red amber colour with a big lasting beige head leaving a beautiful lace. Slightly hazy. The aroma is great. After four years there’s still a very good hop aroma of sweet fruit. Taste is just perfect, warming bittersweet hops with fruits like lychee, peach and red fruit. There’s hints of caramel and wood. Great body and nice carbonation. Top beer!

Bottle: Vintage 2009: #87/1248: Amber brown pour. Smaller to medium sized beige tan head which changes quick into a thick lacing on top of deep dark amber brown colored beer which is most likely to be murky/muddy. The aroma’s are a nicely balanced mix of cream, raisin, oatmeal, flowers, rose hip, some creamy hops, hints of spices like cloves and bay leaf and a hint of horse feeders. The flavours are also pretty balanced: hops, bitters, spices (pepper, bay leaf, etc), alcohol, red fruit (strawberry, cherry, raisin, etc), oatmeal, barley malts, cream, rose hip, ginger, creamy herbs and hints of fish fond and caramelised sweets. Bit barley wine-esque. Aftertaste is very floral and herby with grass, hops, hay, light chalky grass and flowers. Low carbo, soft almost silky mouthfeel, medium to full body and an light oily texture. After all these years, still drinkable and well balanced, but guess fresh this is way better... Unfortunately Retired.

75cl bottle [from trade with Bierkoning] shared with Dutchdrebus. Huge fairly quickly diminishing beige head on top of a dark red colored beer. Smell malts, hops and some fruityness slightly tending to sweetness. Taste malts, slightly caramel, hops, alcohol, some fruityness. Absolutely totally impressed with this beer, which has been retired for years now! Absolutely impressive. Medium to full body and carbonation.

Bottle @ joes thx to benzai. Hazy ruby colour with a big off-white head. Smells barley wine, hops, pine, sweet. Tastes bitter, hoppy, grapefruit, sweet, red fruits, caramel.. This beer is about 4 years old? The taste is so well preserved. Very cool share by benzai. Medium to full body, great carbo.

So how does a dark double IPA survive a couple of years? Impressive, that is how. Sure, its dark amber body isn’t supported by much of a head, but the what must have been boatloads of hops are still in here, giving the spicy and now well developed body a great taste fullness. Foresty and tabacco base is enhanced by the grapefruit hops of which the essence still remains. An example of how hops and classy malts can hold up and improve. Delicious. (Bottle many thanks to Menno and John)

330ml bottle (BierKompass.de)
Glorious hoppy aroma, sharp on pouring, mellower later, roaster as it warms. Deep red, persistent tight tan head. Lovely full palate. Spicy retronasals. Mellow roast, deeply burnt, but so mellow and no harshness. Sweet spicy bite, nice noble bitter tingle. Finish also has a great burnt, but mellow, hum. not really saying 10.8% to me. Another great beer from Menno!

330ml bottle (shared by FatPhil- thank you). Dark copper color. Tiny head appears, stays. Hops, sweet, raisins, bit fruits in aroma. Mellow bitterness. Hops, brown sugar, sweetish, faint raisins, dark fruits in flavor. Very good beer.
