goldtwins (3721), Nesconset, New York, USA Aug 18, 2008 RBSG ’08: Huge thanks to Hopscotch. Poured a very dark brown/black color with a big tan head. The aroma was chocolatey but dry. Smelled woody as well. Awesome flavor. Notes of chocolate and a pleasantly sweet roast. No burnt taste. Warming with a medium to full body. A very nice beer that was able to stand out for me at the grand tasting. TrefwoordPunk (363), Leiden, Netherlands Aug 15, 2008 Bottle 75 cl. Pours pitch black with a medium and fading tan head and a thick sweet aroma of milk-chocolate and sweet salmiac. The initial taste is not too special, very sweet with notes of brown sugar, dark chocolate and liquor. The mouthfeel is soft and creamy, like drinking melted chocolate. The finish is better than anything, a great bitter hopbitterness that stays in your mouth forever. Ughsmash (2958), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle at RBSG. Poured black with a nicely set cap of beige head and lovely lacing as it descended. The aroma picked up deeply-toasted caramel and semi-sweet chocolate with an even deeper layer of strangely seductive vegemite.. I guess that stuff works if you find the right pairing! The flavor had deeply-roasted darker chocolates, light anise, and other dark maltage at the core with intriguing complements of sour tea and bitter dark fruits.. finished long with bunches of roast and caramel/chocolate sweetness.. tasty! Creamy carbonation on the palate and I loved the malt bill used here.. memorable finish that I would gladly try again! Hunsell (397), Amsterdam, Netherlands Aug 10, 2008 Shared a bottle with a good friend. Only share this with good friends! Pours a dark brown-black beer with a nice steady brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, burnt malts. Delicious taste of dark chocolate, coffee and ash in the background. Very well balanced and very drinkable. My favourite beer from Holland so far! New and more impressive beers keep appearing seemingly by the month. This, for me is the best of all of them so far. Black and opaque with a superb dark tan head. Stunning roasted malt aroma. Wonderfully toasty and full of luscious chocolate. Masses of coffee too. Very English stout like but fuller and better. Once in the mouth it is clear this is bloody stunning. Perfectly balanced yet brimming with complexity. This is artistic stuff. All that is great about the nose is apparent in the flavour in abundance along with some awesome notes of liquorice and lashings of tasty alcohol. Thick, creamy and sweet yet somehow remaining perfectly dry and bitter. The treacle notes in the finish are excellent but it’s the massive sledgehammer hit of funk, alcohol and big stinging bitterness that really makes it. This is a real masterpiece in my opinion and what English brewers should be looking at. A proper English style stout with huge knobs on. Beer of the tasting by an absolute mile and easily slotting into my current top 25. I missed three rates I think while I was spending time with this little beauty but sometimes, things like that just are not important when you are in love.
