Little bottle number 1315: been saving this for a special occasion and today is the day (16th Nov 2014). This will be my 4,000th rating, do not usually have a ’saved’ beer for rating milestones, but I have broken the norm and done so this time. Coffee liqueur aroma and initial taste, it then gets a little more complicated. The very dark brew with a thin collar and mini-wisp sat in my Westmalle chalice daring me to smell and taste it: so I did. Rich and deep body to this complex and interesting brew, dark fruits, booze, chocolate, mocha, coffee, vanilla, woody, red wine and port can be added to the flavours and nose. A truly great beer.

2014-10-13. Black body with a modest tan head that fades. Aroma is moderately alcoholic, good amount of whiskey like character over dark malt. Flavour is similar, wood and whiskey like alcohol up front (apparently its cognac) rich sweet dark malt base is pleasant but simplistic at times, the cognac covers up a lot of the more subtle fruit and chocolate nuances. Cocoa notes grow as you go, once the palate has acclimatized a bit. Smooth medium to full bodied palate. Rich, and pleasant for the most part but I find that the cognac and wood notes detract rather than enhance for me. Bottle #800 bottled Dec 2012 via trade with Duffman.

Bottle from bytemesis, thanks Mike! Pours pitch black, minimal mocha colored head that fades to a ring. Very viscous. Aromas are amazing. Sweet cognac over chocolate, dark fruits, wet oak and toast. Taste is just as bold and balanced! Loads of chocolate/dark fruits. Creamy mouthfeel is full but not chewy. Flavors come in waves with an ever so present cognac sweetness, but with the bitter chocolate and tobacco notes. Fantastic beer!

allmyvinyl (3988) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - SEP 13, 2014
Bottle at Craig’s. Pours deep dark brown, thin tan head. Dark chocolate, booze, some apples. Taste has dark sugar, more booze burn, but a chocolatey creaminess that balances out. Long bitter chocolate finish. Nice.

Ruby tinged dark brown, crubbed brown ring head. Smooth sticky toffee apple’d choc cake. Toasty leather shoelace. Lush dark spicy kick, sticky Cat boot stomp on your chest cough of a burny malt. Fading clean spicy sweetness. Rich, richy rich with a bombing sweet tinge. Not sticky but dense. Delicious. Cheers Meno, Cheers Craig...

33 cl bottle. Vertical tasting with 666-ish.
Pours black color with a small off-white head. Dry dark roasty malts on the nose, oat, rye, licorice, wood. Dry malty flavor, lots of sweet chocolate, cognac and faint licorice. Dry and refined. Slightly better compared to 666-ish.

330 ml bottle. Pours a black colour with a small beige head. Aroma of rich nutty maltiness, bread, dark chocolate and muffin. Flavour of roasted malts, red berries, syrup, chocolate, some mud cake and creamy vanilla notes. Full bodied and creamy, soft, roasty finish. Sweet but rich and balanced.

33 cl bottle @ tiong, bottle #1689
Vertical with 666-ish
Aroma is more ’fresh’ and sweet than 666-ish. Also less stale. It has ripe apples, some smoky tones and licorice. Also strong oaty notes. Flavour has oat, cognag, ripe apples, and licorice. Feels a bit old and moldy. Not bad still, more mellow and less aggressive than 666.

Alengrin (2351) - BELGIUM - AUG 19, 2014
Specialty version of the renowned Hel & Verdoemenis, wood-aged. Sticky beige head, black colour; complex, powerful and appealing aroma of coffee, fondant, toasted bread, dried plums, cognac, caramel; thick malty taste, chocolatey, soft carbonation, strong and assertive roasted bitterness, very mouth-filling, oily, with warming, brandy-like alcohol in the finish that never becomes disturbing. Very big, very well-balanced, very exciting Molen beer.
