Bottle at home (bottled 06-11-2014). Pours black with a small tan head. Vinous, tart aroma, chocolate, wood, light funky even. Taste is moderate tart, light sweet, vinous, wood, chocolate, warming alcohol and heavy tannins in the aftertaste, some hoppy bitterness towards the very end. Nice!

Black with a nice beige head. Aroma is chocolate, red wine, port, brown sugar, figs, plum, red grapes. Full bodied, velvety mouthfeel, rich and complex on the palate, well balanced, a little oak astringency on the finish. Taste is dry red wine, oak, molasses, chocolate, figs, balsamic reduction.

Bottle @ Buitenlust with Thompson. Smells quite sweet with a slight hint of bitterness, also fruity and some vanilla. Looks a bit dark red with a small head that rapidly disappeared. Taste is quite bitter with a little bit of sweetness, reminds of coffee and a solid red wine. Overall, a good beer that I’d rate relatively high even though it’s not of a style I usually prefer.

Botlle @ buitenlust with bobson... pours a small beige head, rapidly dissapeared... black through and through... smell bitters, some sweetness... taste bitter a bit of vanilla maybe because of the wine (vanilla) barrels.... not bad but not even close to the last one I had..

Bottle (330 ml) at tasting. Bottled November 6th 2014 so just a bit more than 1 year old. Dark brown, almost black, with a small beige head, moderate retention, leaving little lacing. Aroma is red wine forward alongside berries, ashes, roasted malts and oak / vanilla. Taste is not very sweet and quite winey with ashes, roasted malts, chocolatey notes, boozy notes and earthy/umami notes. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Ashy finish. Some alcohol warmth. Not a bad RIS, but quite disappointing considering how good the regular H&V and some of the variants are and also I usually love port/red wine barrel-aged european RIS. It lacks body and it’s too ashy for me liking. Also, the alcohol is more noticeable than in many other H&V version which make it a lot less smooth. Still, it’s very good.

Bottle shared. Opaque black pour with thin tan head. Aroma is super winey, tons of oak, bourbon, roasty, acrid notes. Taste is ashy, tons of red wine, long lingering roasty flavor, lingering booziness. Palate is full bodied, warming alcohol, light-med carbonation. Good.

Bottle. Poured a dark reddish brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee, chocolate, dark wood and alcohol aroma. Full body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is standout beer.
