(Bottle, Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 22 Feb 2013) Black colour with lasting, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, coffee, honey and oak wood. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, black coffee, vanilla, oak wood and slightly peaty Islay whisky coming through in the finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness (a touch sweeter than the original H&V). Generous cacao bitterness shining through the whisky after a while. The original is probably more balanced, but this is still an excellent beer.

I was expecting great things form this H&V but it has far too much whisky for me. The Haver & Gort BA I drank just before it was much better.

330 mL bottle, served in a snifter alongside the original version at a tasting at Chris’ place. Pours black with a small tan head that fades slowly to a thin cover. The nose has big chocolate and molasses, along with huge scotch barrel and peat. There are also moderate herbs, spice and caramel, but these are overpowered by the scotch barrel. The flavour is malty, with a complex blend of molasses, roasted malts, brown sugar, coffee and dark chocolate. Peat and whisky barrel come through and dominate. The finish is long and lingering roasted malts. On the palate, it is full in body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a nice imperial stout with strong whisky barrel and peat. For me, this was too domineering, and detracted from the otherwise beautiful base beer. 2012-11-23

Very dark brown reddish, like black in the glass. The wishkey is not mu thing for sure. Ruined this one a bit for me. Can imagine some love this one, like the company I shared the bottle with. But im no fan.

Tap at Borefts 2012. World class. Enjoyed this tremendously. Pours pitch black. Peat, whiskey, smoke, sweetness. Full body, very creamy and full.

Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Gorgeous beer, big reddish head. Wafting scotch, big rich leather and smoke. Sweet backbone too. Nice to see this big scotch paired with something a bit different than the standard IRS. Big scotch up front on the sip but actually mellows a bit to let the fantastic base beer rise up. Finishes with sweet big alc stout notes and more of the peaty scotch. Rosy sweet red fruit body in middle. Pretty fantastic.

HUGE thanks to Matt for finding this gem in Amsterdam. Pours black, with a pillowy tan head. Peaty scotch really dominates the nose. Like a little bit of bacon on an old, dirty baseball glove. Smoke, leather, and oak over chocolate in the flavor, dark roasted malts, molasses, with some dark fruit and raisins behind. Just slightly boozy, but really not bad -- this one is definitely a palate bomb. Great mouthfeel, superb use of the scotch barrels -- this one is really a winner. Delicious.

Bottle from Bierkoning, Amsterdam, bottled 5 Sept 2012
Pitch black color, dense, with creamy brownish head. The aroma immediately shows greatness: peat character over creamy roasted malt; there is a fresh touch, almost like a softener. Round mouthfeel; good flavor of roasted malt and dark chocolate, quite rich as expected; moderate peat touch; it has just a bit too much liquorice; the alcohol is very well hidden, and the bitterness correctly high, balancing some residual sweetness.
Another excellent, smooth, peat Imperial Stout from De Molen.

Very deep-dark rusty-brown beer under a rusty head. Quite dry phenolic-tarry nose, hints at black chocolate, dark green leaves/loden felt. Even more intensive tarry flavour, burnt wood, charcoal, but on a sweet (alcoholic) background. As some other of these beers, especially at De Molen, acquires a fruity flavour, as from dark berries, once warmed up a little. Fiery alcoholburn, even a bit raw ethanolwise, yet smooth drinking, if carefully by preference. Somewhat restrained compared to some similar ones, but hardly restrained in quality.
