3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
35.5 cl bottle from De Bierkoning. Black pour with thin creamy brown foam. Aroma is quite smoky, nice whisky notes, definitely islay stuff, but not as harsh as the bowmore barrel-aged stuff I tried, roasty notes. Taste is smoky, salty, really scotch like with a thin silver lining of chocolate maltiness from the original H&V. Palate is rich, not really sweet but full bodied, medium carbonation. The best islay scotch BA beer I’ve had yet.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown, almost black. Old transformer-oil and burnt-off electronics. Perhaps some of the chemists bad ingrediens. I like it, don’t know why, but I do.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black with tan head.
Aroma peated malts, smoke, wood, whisky, alcohol, chocolate, coffee.
Taste chocolate sweet, bitter, some sour, smoke.
Mouthfeel oily, dry.
Nice but certainly not the best version of H&V

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at home (Jul 9th 2013). Pours black with a very thin tan head. Aroma of smoke and peated whiskey, wood, dark chocolate, and alcohol. Smokey, peated taste, coffee, dark chocolate, warming alcohol. Long pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Very nice, but not as good as the wild turkey (unless you like the smokey, peated, stuff more).

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2014 First rating
33 cl bottle. Bottled July 9th 2011. Thanks Magnus & Rebecka (not on ratebeer). Sampled on December 24, 2013.
Marked 11% ABV on the label if I read and wrote it down correctly.
Black color, small light brown head. Huge peat, whisky scent, also alcohol. Peaty, smoked, whisky, alcohol taste. Whisky, peat aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium bitterness.
Loads of peat, loads of whisky, not much balance, base beer doesn’t speak up much at all, if at all. A score of 3.0 seems high for me, since I’d say the beer is not very drinkable, though for sipping it worked in a weird sort of way.
At first gave it 6/3/6/3/12=3.0
With the very poor drinkability though, I’ve opted to change my score to 6/3/6/3/6=2.4.
Perhaps if you sample this from a whisky glass in small amounts and think less of it as a beer, your mind would wrap more around what the character of the drink is.
I’d not finish a bottle of this, I struggled to finish me third of a bottle even, potent and in your face for sure.
33 cl bottle thanks to Ingo! On May 24, 2014. Bottled Sep 2012, marked 11% ABV.
Black color with hints of red and brown, small browb head. Smoked, char coal, alcohol scent. Smoked, dry, peat, alcohol taste. Smoked, whisky, peat aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium high dry bitterness.
The various chacters by themselves are rather nice, but the drinkability is seriously lacking. Could stand a bit more of it this time, we ever drank half a bottle each, but this would be better sold in nip bottles of 18 cl or so, and still to be shared as of my taste. Overpowering and the barrels have very much taken over the beer character.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. Pours black with a large, lacing tan head. Aroma of peat, roasted malt, chocolate and whiskey. Sweet flavor that ends up with alcohol and bitter notes. Medium to full bodied, creamy to oily text and flat carb. Excellent indeed.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours black with small beige head. Aroma is whisky, vanilla and roasted malt. Flavour is smoke, chocolate, vanilla with some burning alcohol. A little too dominant whisky flavour.
