Pour out of 12 oz bottle, thick black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, big ash, wood, hints of earth, lots of woody smoky notes, touch of coffee. Taste is a mix of dark cocoa, licking ashes, wood and smoke, hints of peat, lots of earth, finishing bitter, dry.

Bottle from Kent BF 2013. Black beer with thin beige head. Peaty malt whisky aroma but with a heavy dose of high cocoa level dark bitter chocolate as well. Touch of TCP on the aroma. Now Islay whisky on the whole is not my favourite, but this is, well a lot more restrained than some. In the mouth it’s terrific. Good malty dark malt dark bitter chocolate flavour. Yes the peat and smoke is there and again on the finish. Some seaweed on the finish. For such a beer with strong aromas and flavours, it’s actually pretty well balanced, the sweetness and burnt chocolate flavour balancing the peaty smokiness of the barrel ageing. Deep big wide and does remind me of being on the Isle of Mull. It’s the sea you see. Good deep thick intense but balanced barrel aged impy stout. Menno again has done it. I’ve been keeping this for 6 months, waiting for a time to drink it. Saturday afternoon watching Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy seems to be fitting (Smiley works out of the Hotel Islay). I love both the story and De Molen’s impy stouts when done to this level of poised statement. I do like the character of Peter Guillam though. And Smiley is intelligent and is both soft and hard. I rather admire him even for all of his faults regarding women, or should I say I admire him because of his faults with his wife. Betrayal, loyalty, concentration and above all, doing your job damn well. As an impy stout barrel aged in Islay whisky casks, this does it well. Push comes to shove, it’s still a bit too obvious for me. I was always a more subtle, convivial man rather than concentrating on the intense single minded purpose. Oh and by the way I quite liked the beer.

Bottled 330ml@VWPBF, tnx bierkoning!
Dark opaque black color, small brown head. Very intensive smokey aroma. Full-bodied. Very roasted, lots of whiskey, tar, black malts. Whiskey in the aftertaste. Whiskey overdose.

Ktwse (2322) - SWEDEN - NOV 19, 2013
Pours dark brown to black with low frothy tan head. Aroma of peats, whisky barrels, light coffee and chocolate, german sausage. Taste is peaty, smoky sweet with hints of chocolate but much more like a smoked ale than an imperial stout, I feel the barrels take over completely. Body is thick, oily and woody with soft carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 ml bottle at home - bottled 5/09/2012. Pours pitch black with a small lingering head, beige.Aroma of vanilla, slight peat, dark chocolate, soy sauce, candi Sugar. Medium body, no carbonation, lots of alcohol heat, taste is a mix of varnish and green paprica. Original hel & verdoemenis is gone. Hmmm, okay I guess, certainly not the best BA version of H&V.

Pours absolutely pitch black. Aroma is pure peat. Peat with some vanilla and liquorice flavors along with some honey. Taste is also peat. Present also charred wood, tar, roasted malts, honey, vanilla. Perhaps a bit much on the peaty side objectively, but for someone who just loves peated single malts this sits just fine!

Black with small light brown foam ring. Aroma is very smokey, like a old wet cigar, taste is likewise, very smokey. Little bitter. Strong aftertaste. (Velp 201310) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle from ølbutikken. pitch dark, small brown head. tar, wood, islay peat smoke, roasted malts, islay whisky in the aroma. head peat smoked roast dominates, some wood too, and then roasted malts. Well rounded and delicate is not really the words that pop up in My mind when sniffing this... but it’s lovely. flavor is wood, roasted malts, tar, charred wood. flavors from the barrel and the peat whisky has taken over almost entirely, leaving not much room for the now seemingly mild and no so potent imp. stout. reminds me in some ways of some of the brewdog paradox series.

Pours black with a dark espresso head. Aroma is smokey with burnt sugar, burnt malts, woolen sweaters, used robes, pirate-like maritime, tobacco and the regular HV behind. Taste is peat, smoke and rather dry with notes of tobacco, roasted/burnt malts, savory, earthy and with lots of coffee, salmiak and other qualities from the regular HV. I actually like the balance in this. Interesting barrel!
