Borefts Beer Festival IV. Day 1. Opaque black beer, massive tan head. Big TCP nose. Creamy soft palate. Fresh minerally dark malts. The TCP whisky is quite smooth and well integrated. Some lactose. Finishes dry with spicy TCP whisky linger. Not normally liking this much TCP but here itís so fresh and smooth Iím seduced.

tap at De Molen 2012 ...deep black ... thin tan head ... soft peaty (too much) roast nose ... soft chocolate ... rich malts ... big whisky ... soft roast ... too much whiskey for me

Bottle from Bierkoning, Amsterdam, bottled 5 Sept 2012
Pitch black color, dense, with creamy brownish head. The aroma immediately shows greatness: peat character over creamy roasted malt; there is a fresh touch, almost like a softener. Round mouthfeel; good flavor of roasted malt and dark chocolate, quite rich as expected; moderate peat touch; it has just a bit too much liquorice; the alcohol is very well hidden, and the bitterness correctly high, balancing some residual sweetness.
Another excellent, smooth, peat Imperial Stout from De Molen.

Bottle from Kent BF 2013. Black beer with thin beige head. Peaty malt whisky aroma but with a heavy dose of high cocoa level dark bitter chocolate as well. Touch of TCP on the aroma. Now Islay whisky on the whole is not my favourite, but this is, well a lot more restrained than some. In the mouth itís terrific. Good malty dark malt dark bitter chocolate flavour. Yes the peat and smoke is there and again on the finish. Some seaweed on the finish. For such a beer with strong aromas and flavours, itís actually pretty well balanced, the sweetness and burnt chocolate flavour balancing the peaty smokiness of the barrel ageing. Deep big wide and does remind me of being on the Isle of Mull. Itís the sea you see. Good deep thick intense but balanced barrel aged impy stout. Menno again has done it. Iíve been keeping this for 6 months, waiting for a time to drink it. Saturday afternoon watching Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy seems to be fitting (Smiley works out of the Hotel Islay). I love both the story and De Molenís impy stouts when done to this level of poised statement. I do like the character of Peter Guillam though. And Smiley is intelligent and is both soft and hard. I rather admire him even for all of his faults regarding women, or should I say I admire him because of his faults with his wife. Betrayal, loyalty, concentration and above all, doing your job damn well. As an impy stout barrel aged in Islay whisky casks, this does it well. Push comes to shove, itís still a bit too obvious for me. I was always a more subtle, convivial man rather than concentrating on the intense single minded purpose. Oh and by the way I quite liked the beer.
