(Old BA rate - bottle)
Bottled May 15, 2009, bottle # 1038
Pours a very dark, rich dense brown hue that is not nearly as black as others in the style; little to no head at all even when a more vigorous pour is attempted. Oily and viscous looking coming out of the bottle.
Getting a good deal of booze up front on the aroma; rich roastiness, though and some bittersweet chocolate notes; a touch of sweeter plumminess as well. Just a bit hot on the nose for the booze still. Rich and roasty with fresh coffee flavor; some residual sweetness in the finish but not much at all; kiss of alcohol; and the roastiness lingers on the palate after each sip. Lush and viscous MF with barely any noticeable carbonation, rich body. Definitely a sipper, but a pleasant and warming brew. Hits all the good spots for the style even if it is a little hot on the nose.

75 cl bottle bought at "Csakajosor.hu" Rákóczi út 10, 1078 Budapest.
Pours deep dark almost black, wee foam that disappears fast. Complex smell, the roasted malts dominates. The taste is complex but very well balanced. Despite the high alcohol percentage, the alcohol does not dominate. Rosted malt, chocolate, coffee are dominating. Slight bitter hop taste that stays long in the aftertaste.
Very enjoyable and great beer for a tranquil evening with a close friend who is a beer lover as well. This beer comes among my favorite list.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from the cracked kettle in Amsterdam, brewed and bottled January 2009.
Pours a very deep, beautiful black color, with a very light head, that disappears almost immediately.
Scent is fantastic, very complex smell of roasted malts, chocolate, fruits, honey, caramel, coffee, some hops and a bit of alcohol.
The taste...,WOW, also here chocolate, roasted malts, raisins, caramel and coffee taste. The finish is slightly hoppy. The bitterness of this beer is well balanced with it’s fruitiness, and the beer is very drinkable even though the alcohol percentage is high.
The mouthfeel is a bit strange, only because of the very low carbonation, comparable to some 10 year old vintage beers, but as mentioned by another reviewer, the beer is so great that this is only a minor issue. The beer feels light and smooth in the mouth.
Overall, a fantastic and well balanced beer, simply the best Dutch beer I had until now.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown, tin red hints and creamy wisps on top. Nose composed of ashy chocolate, light oak and nut, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet, more chocolate and malt and only hints of the ash. Some nice balance in both aspects, but the body is a bit thin and the flavor way too simple.
