4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml. Pours a gorgeous black with a chocolate head. Nose is tons of licorice, chocolate and tofee with a whiff of smoke. Flavor is lightly smokey and nutty up front with a huge chocolate and dark fruit middle. Very smooth finishes with only slight roastiness. A malty awesome impy with a creamy oily mouthfeel. This is amazing. Fantastic beer. First one I’ve had from De Molen aside from a few at tastings.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sample from a 750ml bottle. Rich dark brown/black body with a medium tan head. Natural carbonation yields a frothy and pillowy textured head. Intensely decadent nose of chestnuts and dark chocolate. Body is smooth and rich, very polished. Silky, creamy, expertly mashed. A light touch of smoke without the typical char/astringent coarseness compliments the dark chocolate and chestnut focused malt. Awesome stuff.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Aroma of heavily charred malt, practically wood-like or bark-like, maybe some sherry notes, chocolate. Flavor again just so burnt and charred. As it warmed (a lot) some more of the chocolate notes came through along with an increasing toffee presence, but not enough to really overcome the unpleasantly charred feeling to the whole beer. Absolutely zero carbonation, and unlike some others, I didn’t find the rest of the beer to be terribly worthy either, and for 26 bucks, it seems like this brewery has unforgivable quality control issues if some bottles have no carbonation and others are overflowing with foam.

4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
750 ml Bottle. Pours Black with a diminishing light brown head. Fair lacing on my tulip glass. Aromas of chocolate ,toffee, cherry, toasted malts and grassy hops. There was also a big alcohol presence in this beers aroma. Light bodied for a stout with a thin texture. Heavy sweetness led to a bitter end. Nice stout.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle at Pre-ZBF. Cloudy dark-brown beer with very oaky nose. Also fruity, port-like, with red currant notes. Fruity sweetness and quite bitter, and lots of tannins like chewing on grape seeds. Quite hot at the end, with more bitterness coming out in the finish. Damned interesting but too harsh.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle #179 (10.2% ABV) picked up at the Binny’s in Orland Park, IL: As soon as I popped the cork there was a slow eruption of bubbly brown foam that continued until the bottle was drained. What I managed to pour into my glass had a dark brown body (it might look black under poor lighting) with a Humongous bubbly brown head that reduced to a film quite quickly... although the 1 pt 9.4 oz bottle continued with its eruption. The aroma was damp. burnt coffee grounds, black licorice, charred bark, and alcohol. Tastes better, having a recognizeable MALT roastiness, bittersweet chocolate, and thick molasses added to the flavor. There’s a sharp alcohol snap right at the end, and the finish is sticky sweet burnt molasses with a low alcohol burn. This is a one-shot for me. It’s okay, but I do not understand the high average/score.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml bottle, #20/570, brewed 14Aug08, bottled 18Sept08. Second time around with this one. Pours dark brown/black and nearly still, with an incomplete covering of large and loose bubbles that settle to a razor thin ring. As it warms I’m able to stir a whisp of a covering with a few swirls of the glass. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate, espresso, some overripe dark fruits and light roasted malts. Flavor is decadent chocolate on the front, with espresso, molasses, dark fruits and a touch of roasted malts on the finish. This is truly a fine beer, and more carbonation would only take it to another level of enjoyment for sure. In either case, a positive experience and glad I gave it another go!
