Aroma: Alcoholy, dark fruit, coffee, softens up nicely as it settles. Mouthfeel: Soft, round, full-bodied, oily, syrupy. Taste: Sweetness balanced by alcohol. Alcohol dominates in the finish. Aftertaste has a lot of roastiness, and lingering hop bitterness. Overall, quite too alcoholy, sweet and heavy FOR ME- but still at small amounts a very good beer.

Black colored with beige head. Rich coffee dominates in this aroma with smoke, dry cocoa, grassy hops and thin saltyness, excellent aroma. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is more hopped with bitter grass, sweet licorice and some salty licorice come up as well. Aftertaste lasts with some acid and salt, warming mouthfeeling lasts. Excellent one.

(12oz bottle with red wax). Bottle 497/2040. Bottled June 2010. Pours dark brown with loads of yeast and tan head. Aroma has lots of chocolate that I can smell it from a distance. Also getting some anise, leather and wet dog. Taste is roasty bitter with a sweet malt backbone. The alcohol is very noticeable at first sip. Full bodied and slick texture. Finish is dry and roasty. Fairly hoppy. A nice impy and one I’d probably prefer with some age on it.

12 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours black with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma of licorice, caramel, dark fruits, molasses and roasted malt. Flavour of burnt malts, licorice, dark fruits, a little caramel and a bitter coffee and citrus finish. Not the most dynamic body, and the finish leaves much to be desired. Still solid.

Bottle from West Lakeview. Big hiss on cracking, not a gusher though it does have ample carbonation. Pours black with a deep tan head. Nose is chocolate, roasted malts, some molasses and tar. The chocolate is pretty dominant in this one, in a good way. On taste, the carbonation detracts somewhat at first, lending a prickly acidity that fades into lush roasted malts. Very toasty and full flavored, just the carbonic acid gets in the way. Very robust bitterness from the hops as well. Slight astringency. Finishes pretty dry. Pretty big beer that warms you up. Pretty solid, though, imo, not worthy of 96th percentile of RIS.

Bottle #25: Black coloured, small tanned head; extremely rich nose: freshly ground coffeee, wine and fruits and leather; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied; slightly sourish finish, including sweet fruits, port-wine and leather. Great stuff.......

Bottle from the de Molen in Bodegraven. Pours a very deep, beautiful black color. very complex smell of roasted malts, chocolate, fruits, honey, caramel, coffee, some hops and a bit of alcohol. taste chocolate, roasted malts, raisins, caramel and coffee taste. The finish is slightly hoppy. The bitterness of this beer is well balanced with it’s fruitiness, and the beer is very drinkable even though the alcohol percentage is high. Overall, a fantastic and well balanced beer, simply the best Dutch beer I had until now.
