4.3 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 5, 2009 750 ml shared with 1br4r14n. Big gusher of a bottle. Nothing vigorous, but there was a constant flow of carbonation out of the mouth of the bottle for about 10 minutes. Pours a solid black with a big tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, some raspberry, elderberry, really some dark sweet notes. Flavor was similar. Very carbonated for the first half of the bottle but calmed down a bit later on. Flavor was very similar to the aroma but a little boozy and had a strange plastic aftertaste on the back end. Nothing overwhelmingly unpleasant. Really good beer.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
This thing foamed all over the place for a solid 10 minutes, kind of like that vinegar and baking soda science experiment in slow motion. Pours black with a tan head. The aroma is fantastic and lasts forever. Huge roasted malt, chocolate, complex dark fruits, and a touch of alcohol. The flavor is a little tamer, some nice roasted malt and chocolate with some alcohol burn in the end. Mouthfeel was too carbonated for most of the bottle and got in the way of the flavor. An amazing stout just the same.

(Rating #2592)

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
25.4 oz bottle. Cork explodes into my hand before i can finish untwisting the cage. Ten minutes of foam control and things have settled enough to put down the bottle. Ebony with a big tan head. Nose is licorice, molasses, coffee, chocolate and hay. Medium to full body, lightened up by an airy tingle. Taste is blueberry, dark chocolate, espresso and grapefruit pith. Another decadent dessert stout from De Molen.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
750ml bottle from CaptainCougar’s ale-vaults, shared at the DC Local Gathering. Super gusher. Big roasty choco-coffee aroma. Deep brown-black color with a thick beige head. Big flavor, exceptional stuff. Thick burnt chocolate tastes. Remarkably well done, reminiscent of some of the better Southern Tier Chocolate Stouts. Great beer.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled at the DC Local Gathering. First impression wasn’t great. The moment the cap popped it gushed a geyser of foamy, tan head. Once it got to my glass it was a viscous, opaque black with a frothy tan/beige head. Aroma is toasty, chocolate, coffee, nuts, cherries. Flavor has dark fruits, dark chocolate, toasted malts, molasses, brown sugar, slight wood. Full bodied but easy to drink surprisingly.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line:
Burnt roastiness dominates this effervescent Imperial Stout, lending coffee and dark chocolate notes to an otherwise well attenuated mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-There was a serious gushing problem in this bottle, and this after it having stood upright for a long time. If it had been kept longer, I’m afraid it could have exploded. NOT cool.
-A veil of foam covers dark brown gown.
-I guess the high ratings mean this poor bottle conditioning has not been rampant, but then again the last few ratings do talk of either flat beers or gushers. Strange...
-I wonder if the relatively dry body and the gushing are the sign of developing bacteria. Don’t get me wrong, the flavor profile is mighty pleasant, but it could be improved upon with better conditioning.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 005, shared by robert at SL. Black in color, small head that faded quickly. Aroma of stong coffee and congnac.. Taste is lots of roasted malts, coffee and congnac... I can pick up the alcohol in this one... I am not a cognac fan so this doesnt sit right. Oilly texture... Overall, unique but not a fan. Thanks roberto!

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle #144 of 282, bottled September 26th 2008. Gusher. Dark roasted aroma, licorice and almost a menthol or eucalyptus edge to it. Super carbonated fizzy mouthfeel. More medium sweet black licorice and tar in the flavor. Intense.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled Sept. 26, 2008 #144/282. This was one hell of a gusher!!! I ended up wearing a healthy dose of it... Pours (or erupts) a dark black brown with a monumental light brown head the extended onto the counter. Aromas of toasted malt, alcohol, and dates. Flavor is intense and bitter, with raw sugar, coffee, and roasted malt. A very solid stout - just exercise caution when opening...
