5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I tried the Oak Aged 40 year Cognac version at Portland International Beer Festival. I tried 13 beers there, the beers I tried averaged 3 tickets each. This is one was 5 tickets, one of only three that I would buy again, and the best tasting beer I have ever had! I read through the first page of reviews and agree with all the good things said. However, no one else has mentioned the obvious extreme quality of the Cognac flavor. Perhaps I have tried a very rare version!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(DC Local Gathering, 750ml bottle, thanks CaptainCougar) – A volcano of black beer topped with a gushing dark tan foamy head (that would not quit). Thick dark currant and Italian coffee aromas rest on a solid foundation of black chocolate cream. Intense coffee and dark fruit flavors balance well on a berry cream and burnt chocolate tone from start to finish. Medium to full bodied, moderate carbonation, bittersweet finish. A great sipper that merely needs to tone the carbonation down…

750 ml bottle at Birreria Paradiso. Black hole black with a large dark maroon head. Aroma of bitter chocolate and roasted malt. Full bodied, taste of seventy percent cacao with an extraordinarily long burnt espresso finish. Amazing brew.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours like a volcano - make sure its cold enough; I nearly killed Pat with the cork! Lost about 1/4 btl in the eruption. Brown head with lace that runs to a beer that is nearly black. Lots of floating goodies where the light shines through. Aroma rich earthy loam with chocolate and coffee. it was pleasant watching a video of the brewery while sipping what was left of this wonderful RIS. Unique flavor full of old wood and savory - cloves and tobacco perhaps with chocolate, licorice and coffee. The big three for me!

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Draft at Brasserie 4:20 in Rome. Wonderful colour, jet black with big beige creamy head which retains it’s lace until the end. Fabulous aroma of vanilla, coffee and marinated dark fruits. The mouthfeel is thick, coating the mouth. The flavour is massive alcohol but beautifully restrained by the mass of flavours ranging from tobacco to more vanilla. The wonderful host at Brasserie 4:20, Alex, gave me a bottle to take home which i am drinking now - pretty much the same as the draft, just superb. By far and away the best European imperial stout.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle: The aroma has lots of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla, and a hint of plum. It pours a dark brown with a moderate light brown head with decent retention. The flavor starts with lots of dark chocolate and light roasted malt. The finish as lots of black licorice and some faint roasted coffee. Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

Yep another beauty poured at JW77’s tasting! Dark, dark brown. Lot of chocolate covered coffee beans with some tar and vanilla. Chcolate and coffe flavors meld amazingly well with some fair hops and the asphalt flavor is noticeable. Another winner.

Price not withstanding, this is one seriously phenomenal beer. Shared with my brother and both of us knew that this was the beer of the night for us. A deep choco/coffee aroma with some anise, charcoal, toffee, dark nougat, vanilla and pine. Smooth, silky texture. Flavor is a cavalcade of flavors. Bitter walnuts, huge dark chocolate, an almost Kaluha like flavor at times, coffee creamer, heavy roasted coffee beans, vanilla, tobacco, alcohol, and dried figs. Stunning.
