4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Draft at Brasserie 4:20 in Rome. Wonderful colour, jet black with big beige creamy head which retains it’s lace until the end. Fabulous aroma of vanilla, coffee and marinated dark fruits. The mouthfeel is thick, coating the mouth. The flavour is massive alcohol but beautifully restrained by the mass of flavours ranging from tobacco to more vanilla. The wonderful host at Brasserie 4:20, Alex, gave me a bottle to take home which i am drinking now - pretty much the same as the draft, just superb. By far and away the best European imperial stout.

Pours a dark brown with a good dark tan head that leaves some nice lacing. Aroma is liquorice, smoke, dark fruit, molasses, toffee. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel, great balance of sweet malt and roasty bitterness on the palate, with some lingering bitterness and umami on the aftertaste. Taste is dates, molasses, raisins, liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate. Delicious.

bottle at a bar. had a lot of the BA versions, so it’s hard to compare this one. poured deep black with a small non lasting mocha head. chocolate, nuts, bitter espresso, vanilla, roast, some burned caramel. weak mouthfeel compared to the ba versions.
