The (11.2 oz.) bottle was purchased at Parker Pie, in West Glover by WillRunForBeer; he graciously shared this with me. Many thanks! To plastic Dixie cup (shut up), it pours an oily chestnut-tinted dark brown with which a trim off-beige head barely a fingernail in length. Aromas of flat Coke, whole cloves, European noble hops, young oak, rosemary, pipe tobacco, chocolate malt, London yeast, and mint. Tastes the same with the addition of raspberry jam, bourbon oak/bourbon vanilla, roast, and ground cinnamon. Alcohol definitely presented itself after the first sip. A bit spicy and and a bit woodsy. I did feel like I was consuming a Coke-based mixed drink after 15 minutes of nursing this gargantuan lovely, but that wasn’t enough to warrant me hating on this. It’s really fracking good.

Pours black into a snifter. White head with little retention recedes to nothing. Hot caramel and vanilla aromas. Hot caramel and vanilla upfront turning to thick bourbon in the lasting finish.

Black pour with a brown hue and a thin off white head and very light lacing .... Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malts, light licorice, light oak and some bourbon .... Taste is of dark chocolate, sweet sugar, dark roasted malts, very light bourbon, and some vanilla .... Has that Classic burnt dark roasted malt ... Has a deep roasted malty/bourbon finish with a nice bitter kick ..... Abv hidden well ... Has a lingering bitterness in the finish, mouthfeel is soft and oily .. Strong coffee in this brew. Nearly perfect doesn’t get much better than this.

(2013 bottle, called Bourbon Barrel Aged, at VilleValla pub, Linköping, Nov 6 2014) Something for International Stout Day. Pours black as night with a small tight pale tan head, no lace. Aroma really driven by bourbon, the slightly sweet and boozy whiskey notes dominate with a light hint of wood and some dark unsweetened cacao notes. Very much like smelling a spirit. Flavour really follows, it is heavily dominated by bourbon character and elegant due to cellar age. The bourbon means it seems sweetish but not sugary, little vanilla/oak really, just the woody hints in the whiskey. Towards the finish it becomes fairly dry with dark roast coffee, unsweetened chocolate, light char. Bourbon lingers too. Smooth medium-full slick body, almost no carbonation, feels more boozy from flavour than heat. You have to like whiskey to like this beer, the stout seems almost subservient to the bourbon. It’s very smooth and rounded and a lot less harsh than I was expecting from the buzz around the base beer. Super sippable, elegan actually.

2013 vintage. Totally black colour with low stable head. Very strong aroma of bourbon which totally dominates at nose. On background are present some wood and chocolate. Taste is heavy sweet and light bitter with very sensible alcohol note. I felt like I drunk chocolate liquor mix with bourbon. Full body. Very thick texture. Flat carbonation. Perfect for degustation. RIS with very perceptible bourbon note (especially in aroma). Highly recommented for whiskey/bourbon lovers.

In short: A highly roasted big black ale with lots of whisky soaked oak barrels. Brutal but somewhat drinkable monster beer.
How: Bottle at Cervecería Arte&Sana, Malaga Spain.
The look: Black body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: Nose is big, nice oak, not overly whiskey, a bit chocolaty. Body is full (obviously), a somewhat grainy texture, adequate carbonation of sparse hard bubbles. Taste is thick grainy burnt malts, plenty of toasted oak, some whiskey, cacao powder, dry grass. Some heat but overall the alcohol is well hidden. Body is heavy but not too syrupy because it is so roasted. The high roastiness (read ‘totally scorched malts’) helps to hide the sweetness, it also makes the beer less syrupy, but here it is so over-the-top roasted that it becomes aggressively so, almost ashy. Pretty much what I was expecting, a brutal but somewhat drinkable monster, Just another big De Molen tick for me. Looking at the super-high ratings I seem to be pretty much the only person who doesn’t love that beer, not surprising, I’ve always been the odd man out, in the 90s I was the dude in the back who was the only one who wasn’t Kung Fu fighting.

33 cl bottle from Pothole in Tallinn (ca € 12). Labelled as "Bourbon Barrel Aged"; ABV is 11%; bottled Nov 19th 2013. Not sure how this is the same thing but oh well. Pours very dark brown, appears near black with a reddish brown hue in the glass. Head is minimal and drops fast, leaving a thin layer around the edge with no lacing. Aroma strikes me with a whiff of amazing oaky woodiness and indeed a strong impression of Bourbon (not had Wild Turkey, so for lack of something better (?) it reminds me of, well, Jim Beam) - behind all that there’s a great deal of bitter (or more like spicy) hops and chocolaty malts, but also notes of brandy, vanilla, cocoa beans... Hard to believe this is beer... The aroma is complex, multilayered and near to what I’d call perfection. Taste is, as someone noted below, less complex, with sweet and mellow chocolate and dark ripe fruits at first, then - within a millisecond - the armada of hop bitterness together with a woody alcoholic zing take over, working pleasantly with the near full body and flat carbonation. It’s a joyride of a beer. Definitely worth the € 12.

Old nip bottle from 2010, 13% abv sent to me by Boltz555. Thick black pour, almost no head to speak off. Aroma is oak, ash, vanilla, marshmallow, booze, lots of oak. Taste is oily mouthfeel, vanilla, ash, oak, roasted malts, ash/oak finish with light carbonation, aftertaste is bitter with some heat from the Abv. Really nice, lots of barrel, a bit harsh on the finish but overall very solid.
