Bottle @ benzai. Pitch black colour with a lovely, amazing brownish head. Instant 5 for the appearance. Smells roasty, malts, chocolate, wood, bourbon. Lovely. Tastes bourbon, wood, lots of chocolate, roasty, almonds. Holy shitballs. Amazing. Reminds me of a cornetto icecream. Love it. Full body, silky, lovely carbo.

33cl bottle. Bottled Jan30th 2013. Pitch black, brown head. Sweet bourbon aroma, vanilla, peat, licorice, all coming together nicely. Amazing aroma, I could sniff this all night. Flavor has vanilla, sweetness, licorice, and peaty notes. Peat quite strong towards finish. Incredibly smooth. Finish lasts forever with vanilla and roasted malty, coffee notes. Absolutely amazing.

PotjeBier (1781) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - SEP 17, 2013
33 cl bottle from De Bierkoning @ home. Pitch black color. Beige, light brown head. Aroma’s are wonderful and subtle: bourbon, sweet chocolate, oak, light smoke/peat, roasted malts, a bit alcohol. More sweet chocolate retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, somewhat alcoholic, chocolate-y. Strong alcohol feel, warming and a bit prickly. Velvety mouthfeel. Flavor develops towards roasted malts, slightly ashy, lightly bitter. This is how I like my Molen impies!

awesome! sample at the brewery, your standard rediculously perfect huge imperial stout, with a rich brownie like barrel aging flavors.

One of countless variations on the imperial stout theme by De Molen. Yellowish beige, thinnish and fairly loose yet moussy head, colour opaque black, no light coming through at all. Very strong aroma, the vanilla and smoked meat still reach your nose from a yard away; other impressions of chocolate sauce, charcoal, cigar ashes, hint of bourbon, tar, leather, oak, walnuts, pipe tobacco, candied dates, soup meat, peat. Sweet onset of candied fruit and chocolatey malts, something honeyish, very smooth, oily and even juicy mouthfeel with low carbonation, deep multi-layered, delicious maltiness, nutty, caramelly and profoundly chocolatey, lots of vivid spicy yeastiness, smokiness appearing more prominently in the finish but more sutbly than I had expected and therefore in good balance with the maltiness; in the end, woody tannins, warming bourbon, some peppery hops and a full, mouth-lining, thick coffee-like roasted bitterness appear in full glory, all balanced well. The smoky touch remains the longest, as well as the throat being warmed by the alcohol. I had expected either the smoky or the roasted bitter character to dominate even more as is often the case in this type of beers, but they are both gentle and rounded and keep themselves in place, leaving both each other as well as the delicious chocolatey malt sweetness enough room to express itself. The alcohol is quite prominent in the tail, but stays charming and does not become too wry or obnoxious. I was particularly marvelling at the ashy charcoal aspect of the aroma, and this aspect too remains gentle enough not to outplay the other flavour components. Wonderful, different, complex and powerful, in my view this is one of those beers which make a convincing argument for De Molen’s world class status.

Beautiful deep dark colour, nose with peated bourbon and smoked dark chocolate. Taste with similar influences plus caramel and licorice. We disagreed with my boyfriend on the sweetness of the beer. I found it way too sweet while he liked it just like that. Nice wax top on the bottle that ads a bit to the experience. De Molen is definitely a great brewery...

Aroma of peat, bourbon and dark chocolate. Taste is peat, chocolate, bourbon and chocolate. A bit unbalanced and needs be be aged so the malt flavour comes through.
