UPDATED: NOV 30, 2013 It’s a bit of an odd one. First of all there’s pretty much no foam. It’s dark brown, near black. Has the aroma of molasses and caramel sweetness with the expected barrel oak, then followed by a little weird mossy barnyard like funkiness. It all comes back in the flavor. It’s still on the good side, has a rich flavor, but doesn’t have that depth finish to balance out the sweetness and give it somewhat more character and depth you’d expect of a barrel aged beer. Maybe it needs more aging. The finish has the funkiness of barnyard and whisky that doesn’t linger as great some other barrel aged beers do. Actually quite bored me halfway. Didn’t finish it.

Intensiver malziger, leicht alkoholischer Antrunk. Holznoten, keine Karbonisierung. Mittelstarke Würzigkeit, brotig, wässrig werdend. Erstaunlich leer. 8/7/8/9/12/8

300ml black wax sealed bottle served in a snifter. A: Pours a deep black color that forms (with some aggressiveness) a thin and creamy beige head with low retention and absolutely no lacings formed and left in the glass. S: Nose is sweet and woody. Strong notes of whiskey and roasted malts. Notes of toffee, oak, licorice and alcohol. Hints of dark chocolate and whiskey again. T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of oak, licorice and roasted malts. Notes of roasted malts and toffee. Bourbon. M: Full body. Low carbonation. Bourbon and oak in the aftertaste. O: Good drinkability.

Bottle 33cl. Pitch black. Difficult to generate foam :-). Heavy nose of peat, iodine and smoked malt. What an intense aroma. Somewhere way back you’ll discover some rye bread with hints of sweetness. Great beer

Bottle @ Buitenlust with Thompson. Smells quite sweet with a slight hint of burned sugar, coffee and licorice. Looks dark but consistent with a medium tan, foamy head. Tastes quite bitter and somewhat sweet, a lot like dark chocolate with a hint of wood/charcoal. Overall, another great beer from The Molen that’s just different from anything in its style.

Aroma : peated, malts, coffee, charcoal
Taste : lovely balanced beer, heavy peaty flavour, some coffee, but overall mostly smoked/peaty, nice, but the turf en veen was way better !

(De Molen Hemel & Aarde (Bruichladdich BA)) Nip bottle as De Molen Hemel & Aarde Bruichladdich barrel from 1972, bottle number 75. From my Secret Sinterklaas a couple of years ago, many thanks! Served into a snifter, ABV 9.5% on the label. Opens with a light pfssh and pours a very dark, almost totally black coloured beer, with dark foam covering thinly its surface and sticking around the glass. Aroma of alcohol, vanilla, some peat, roasted malts, iodine, whiskey. Taste wise has hold up pretty well, faint hints of oxidation that actually compliment the beer, roasted malts, dark chocolate, light peat, well hidden alcohol, plenty of whiskey. Medium to full body, still active carbonation. Still great after six years in the bottle.
