Pitch Black pour with a little brown foam for a head peated and roasted malt aromas burst out and are complimented by a whisky and a chocolate smell the taste is a whole journey by it self leading with a strong malt roasted malt bitterness passing through chocolate flavors with an abysmal finish that turns sweet starts with coffee and ends with with a spicy whisky burning sensation that goes on for a long time the body is full the texture is all nice and creamy carbonation is flat an overly complex and sublime brew !!!
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 pantanap (2838) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 12, 2012
Nip bottle. Thanks to alex again for the comparison... Pours with major head. Liquid is deep reddish brown almost chocolate. Topped with a heavy fluffy deeper tan head... Peaty with iodine and charred malts. Light on the cocoa and chocolate... Flavors are more of the same with more o a harsh iodine finish. Not as controlled or enjoyable as the base beer. Mouthfeel was a little too lively and effervescent in terms of body.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 erickok (1074) - Leiden, NETHERLANDS - MAY 10, 2012
No head on this pitch black body. Smokey wood, honey, brown caramel. Smooth sweetness, very much smokey and burned, milk chocolate. Milky texture. Ending is nice and well developed, revealing some yeast character. Hotness from the alcohol. More refined, smokey and characterful than the ’normal’ Hemel & Aarde, but also more boozy (than I remember). Well made imperial stout. (33cl bottle, bought at the brewer)
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Rettep (977) - SWEDEN - APR 29, 2012
Bottle, a 12% version bottled 08/12/2011.
Pitch black with a minimal porous brown head that dissolves into a ring.
Aroma: peaty, chocolate mousse, licorice, tar.
Taste: chocolate pralines, licorice, peat, some smoke, soy sauce, toffee, the alcohol is hardly noticeable.
Full-bodied, thick, still.
Couldn’t live up to the regular H&A, but still great stuff.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 MotherBrother (298) - Aalborg, DENMARK - APR 27, 2012
Reads 12 % abv. on the bottle.
Pour opaque black, with just a slight reddish rue around the edge, and no head at all.
Aroma is quite smokey and roasted of peat, coffee, licorice, port, wood and whiskey.
Taste is a little sweet up front, with a dry, bitter and roasted finish.
Oily and a little watery body, with very little carbonation. This is quite a bit more boozy than the original, also there’s quite a lot more heat.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 olio (1530) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 15, 2012
33 cl bottle. Bottled on 08.12.2011. BBE +25 years.
Originally rated on 20100513. (9+4+8+4+17)
Pours pitch black color with almost no head at all, small beige foam on the sides. The bottle was filled up to it’s cap.
The nose is first filled with smooth bourbon barrel notes, lots of dark roasted malts follow, some faint tobacco notes, peat, mild tar and ash dry chocolate. Some vanilla comes through also. Flavor of ash dry dark chocolate, roasted malts, peat, bourbon, vanilla notes, mild tar, caramel notes and some mocha. Nice warm alcohol burn finishes the dry and a bit bitter chocolaty palate. Very complex, slow-drinking beer. Excellent.
