4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
At a tasting, thick brownish head, opaque black with hints of brown streaks, Strong aroma of roasted coffee, smoked meat, olives and chocolate, dlavour of charred wood, roasted coffee, dark chocolate and vanila, prunes and thick dark soy, some light hops lurking in the back, long bitter chocolate aftertaste. Good and suprisingly original.

Bottle #315: Pitch black, big stable tanned head, leaving a good lace; vanilla, leather and liquorice in the dry vinous and roasty nose; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied; lingering solid sweet-bitter finish with wood, tobacco and toasted malt. Very complex, very demanding....., but not my cup of tea!

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
18cl bottle. Pours a black with very small hints of dark red and a long lasting super puffy dark tan head. Gorgeous looking beer. Nose is super dense malts, alcohol, and tons of smoked heavily peated malt. Bitter and peaty all over with lingering notes of nut and chocolate as the bitterness and smoke begin to fade. Alcohol is no existant. Body is incredibly dense and chewy. Fantastically made. Another homerun by De Molen.

Bottle. Near black with a beige foam. Aromas are earthy roast malts with lots of smoky notes. Dark chocolate with gritty grain. Cocoa bean with hazelnuts. Flavours are bitter dark chocolate with lots of peppery alcohol. Creamy with light berries and bready yeast. Coffee roast malts with grapefruit bitterness and lots of alcohol. Gritty and earthy on the finish. Very good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Black beer with a light but nice brown head. The aroma is smokey and roasted, the flavour is deeply roasted and bitter. Overall a very nice well roasted and bitter beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottled, 0.75l) Almost black in color, with no head. Aroma of strongly peated malt, licorice, oatmeal-like sourness, oak barrel, touch of vanilla. Flavor is quite roasty, even slightly burned, sourish-bready-malty, not quite as peaty as the nose, with some licorice and light spiciness. Medium to full body with flat carbonation. Donít mind the flatness, but it does feel a bit thin. Quite enjoyable overall, but far from perfect... still looking forward to sample the barrel aged version. 4447

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle; thanks Tom!! Dense roasty brown with thin creamy white head; meaty peat, chocolate and scotch; rye spice, a little hops and plenty of booze; lots of dry meaty peat that covers up most other flavors; some bitter chocolate in the finish; some ashy too; strange, but pretty yummy at the same time; like the meaty flavors

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 19, 2010 200th rating! Wanted to give De Molen another chance, had some bad experience with some beers, cause of the lack of carbonation. My 250th will be a Belgian beer to get the honour. This time, again, our friends from the Netherlands gets the possibility to surprise me at a X00 number of ratings. Thank you to Noize for the trade! Brewed 6 feb 2008, bottled 11 march 2009, in my stomach 24 may 2010. Bottle 386 of 768. Pours out very dark, almost pitch black. Nice darker beige, almost brown head, big, and holds very nice. Smell of roasted, coffee, chocolate and spices. Pretty heavy roasted smell. Very oily structure, burned/roasted taste. Canít taste much more then roastiness, coffee//. Some cookies, chocolate and liqour. Pretty hard bitter aftertaste that holds a very long time. Somewhat to roasted for my taste. Should have some more balanced taste. The carbonation at this bottle is excellent, maybe even a bit to much. Not a bad brew at all, but have tasted better from De Molen. Also my 20th rating of a beer from our neighbours at the north.
