COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made with the most heavily peated malt in the world from the Bruichladdich distillery. Almost pitch black and opaque, small head. Furiously peated aroma, hiding the malt, licorice and dark chocolate somewhat. Very full bodied, thick mouthfeel, like fluid bread. Dark chocolate, loads of peat, lapsang souchong tea, chocolate cake, culminating in an almost endless aftertaste that also has licorice.
Alcohol varies by batch.

Nip. Bottle 55. Bottled on 18/01/2010. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of peat malt, sweet chocolate, and licorice. Flavor of peaty chocolate, light tangy licorice, and a subtle black malt. Palate is creamy and coating, but doesn’t linger long. A fine brew.

Sehr dunkelbraunes, fast schwarzes Bier mit schöner bräunlichen Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr röstmalzig, schokoladig, Kaffee, dunkle reife Früchte. Geschmack intensiv röstmalzig, Kaffee, Schokolade, dunkle Früchte.

750ml bottle [#28 of 150, bottled 2011/03/07, 9.5% abv]. Pitch black colour with late awakening, small, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Intense, rich and complex dark malty aroma, notes of chocolate, treacle, liquorice, leather, peat, tar. Taste is dry to bitter hoppy, moderately sweet dark malty, notes of dark chocolate, treacle, salty liquorice, a touch of peat; full body, oily texture, soft & sticky palate. This is a De Molen classic, and I think this perfectly illustrates the core area of De Molen’s genuine strenght. Without knick-knack, neither barrel-aged, (un-)intentionally sour nor in any other way developed further. I believe that Imperial Stout is one out of the very few styles that actually can originate a 5.0-rating, and furthermore, I believe that De Molen is able to produce this by "standard brewing". Very good.

Keg Half Pint at White Horse European Beer Festival 2012, Parsons Green, London in Aug 2012 - Pitch Black in colour. Very smokey peated malts; pronounced iodine; whisky notes very evident. The peated malts dominate the aroma and taste. They overwhelm the other malty characteristics; dark chocolate, espresso coffee, liquorice, dark sugar. Fruity; dried fruits. Hoppy; big hop bitterness to balance the malts. Full bodied, thick mouthfeel, rather tarry. Sweet-bitter smokey peated roasty malts throughout. Great stuff. Terrific Impy Stout!

Black pour with a tall creamy tan head that eventually fades to 1 finger. Aroma is huge on peat smoke and iodine, along with woody smoke and dark chocolate, then some briny char, roast, earth, licorice and burnt nuts. Flavor is all chocolate and peat smoke up front, followed by dark roast coffee, roasted nuts, campfire smoke, earth, hints of sautéed dark fruit, burnt sugar, earth, burning hay and lighter roast, briny char, roast and lots of lingering smoke to the finish. Heavy body, creamy, oily and syrupy entry, heavy and blanketing carbonation and oily, boozy, slightly solvent-like and slightly acidic finish. Really tasty stuff overall, the flavor lasts forever and moves from one group of tastes to the next like acts in a play. Way, way over carbonated though, coupled with the light, but odd acidity in the finish, I have to wonder if it might be infected.

Botella. Presencia negra casi opaca con corona poco persistente. Aroma predominante ahumado. En boca café y chocolate, turba y claras notas de cereal con un agradable final largo cafetoso y ahumado

Backlog. Bottle from Systembolaget. Way too smokey for me, the peated malt drowns all the finesse.

Wow. A very smoky, first taste a bit sour, than some roasted malts, sweet caramellized chocolate, bit bitter coffee, long aftertaste, velvety, it is a taste bud massage, grows with every sip. Recommended if you like your imperial stout rough yet delicate, made for the factory worker who knows how to enjoy life! ---Rated via Beer Buddy (iOs)

Black with minimal beige head. Massive peat, burnt toast, tart berries, yoghurt, barnyard. Taste is sour, with a light sweetness and burnt bitter finish. Medium bodied. Complex and interesting stuff, but not too into the yoghurt notes. Seems a bit infected or something.
