4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Balazs (576) - Budapest, HUNGARY - DEC 19, 2010
Poured very dark brown, almost black with a small, beige head that is quick to reduce to a lacing one. Delicious aroma of espresso, wooden cask, dark chocolate, molasses. Earthy and deep roasted. Dense as a meal with low carbonation. Brown sugary sweet taste with a bitter, strong hoppy aftertaste. Superbly balanced all over, excellent complexity, a masterpiece. Well done, and thanks!
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 iep (230) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JAN 29, 2009
Pours a viscous black with little carbonation. Starts with peat-smoke on the nose, followed up by pine and tar from the hops, and chocolate/coffee stout-flavors. A smoky palate (Port Charlotte peat?) rapidly overtaken by intense hop-bitterness and sweeter malts. Lingers for a while on the sweet-ish coffee and caramel flavors, then finishes very ashy and dry. Strong hop-bitterness lingers for a long time, together with a roasty bitterness from the malts. Remarkable consistency, very thick and rich. Overall.. there’s an impressive amount of flavors packed into this one, without being messy: a bit of a giant, with very very intense peat-smoke and ashy stout flavors.

With the flavor of peat smoke, coffee and chocolate, a Ibu of 96 and an impressively impenetrable mouthfeel, this is one of the best stout I’ve ever tasted. Quite a masterpiece in which strength, texture and loads of spicy nuances go hand in hand. We drank number 7 of an output totaling 240 33cl bottles.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2012 Rerate 10-01-2012 During tasting at De Molen we had a three year old bottle of this beer and it improves by age. Especially the body is just perfect. Soft and creamy.
Wow!

bottle from Arendsnest in Amsterdam - I jotted down all the information I could find on the bottle. Bottle 80/240. Brewed Oct 17, 2008. Bottle Nov 20, 2008. 96 EBUs. Bittering hops - Nugget. Aroma hops - Amarillo. I guess I needed something to do. Now for the rating - Pours black with a one finger lingering tan head. It has a rich aroma of smoky peat and dark roast malt. The taste is huge with big smoked peat flavors and an explosion of dark roast malt with notes of coffee and chocolate. That’s all balanced out by a big dose of hops that leaves bitterness to linger on the tongue along with clinging roast malt and smoke. It’s a very full bodied brew and it’s absolutely fantastic, one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Disclosure: I love imperial stouts and I love peat rich scotch.
