4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from De Bierkoning.
Not a surprise, I find this beer delicious in every way. Excellent look with a large creamy tan head and near pitch black body. Strong flavor intensity and complexity from start to finish. Coating mouth feel. Nose is strong and fairly complex. An incredibly great beer. Quite stunning. De Molen’s beers are one of a kind. The best stout brewer on earth.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Poured a thick black, with a dense tan head. Really syrupy beer; stuck to the side of the glass when swirled. Huge, rich aroma of dark fruit, spice, leather, port and Islay whisky. Full mouth feel, really smooth. Smokey flavours, with complex molasses, treacle and roasted malt. Finish was burnt malt, black syrup, prunes and liquorice. For my tastes, beer doesn’t get much better than this.

Bottle at home, 23rd May 14, pours black, just bubbles for head. Aroma, liquorice, chocolate, leather. Taste full on salty liquorice, some tartness, chocolate and leather, low carbonation, easy drinking, hops and bitterness balance the sweet. Another great impy from De Molen

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
11.2oz bottle. Bottle #1899 from the October 5, 2010 batch...which makes this a 3.5 year-old beer. I am drinking this tonight because work fucking sucks and I fucking deserve a good fucking beer. Wish I remembered where I bought this. Most likely in Berkeley or Concord. Perhaps at John’s Market when I was in Seattle? The aroma on this is quite nice with plenty of chocolate sweetness, roast, light oxidized sherry notes, some spiciness, too. Not sure what the spice is, but I know it’s in there. Opaque, inky black body with some floaties. Still has an amazing brown, strong fluffy head after all this time, which is impressive. Great lacing. Amazing. Wow, this starts immediately sweet with decadent chocolate sugars present. Becomes a little roasted in the middle with some light vanilla character, too. Pretty velvety. Finishes late with a light ethanol burn and some more spiciness...almost like ginger. I am amazed at how well this beer has held up. I do not detect any real oxidation or sherry. My guess, though, would be that this is around it’s peak. Really fucking good.
