4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 jlruthven (475) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 4, 2010Good lord, what a kick in the ass. 2009 bottle pours into a snifter motor-oil black, huge billowy brown head that stays put forever. I smell BIG burnt coffee, espresso, chocolate, wood, smoke, tobacco, licorice. Taste is massive with bitter coffee and chocolate, smoke, with some tart black cherry. Finishes sharp, oily palate. Immensely complex and rewarding.

This one poured darker brown color with a tan head. Aroma was of dark chocolate, mild roast, light smoke, dark fruits and licorice. Flavor was somewhat on the sweetside, yet roasted and smokey, with a very thick sticky finish. A pretty good impy, but not great.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jgb9348 (3964) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAR 26, 2013
Deep dark brown body with a nice ruby and violet tint at the bottom, all with a fast-dying light brown head about a centimetre tall. Aroma of tons of alcohol, roasted malt, anise, licorice, soy sauce, a bit of light hops and a bit of coffee - strong. Full-bodied; Strong effervescence up front with a ton of alcohol and roasted malt notes. A lot of nuts, anise, chocolate, coffee, milk, caramel, toffee and a ridiculous amount of vanilla noticeable. Aftertaste is very complex with the malt, nuts, earth, anise, licorice, soy sauce, milk and alcohol all coming out here - some brown sugar at the end also pungent. Overall, a good and very strong flavoured beer - even after aging for about a year! Definitely worth trying if you like the style, but shows more pungency and a more defined malt flavour than most American Imperial Stouts and way more carbonation. I sampled this 33 cL wax topped bottle, purchased at Olive Tree Market Place in San Diego, California on 05-May-2012 for US$8.99 sampled at home in Washington on 26-March-2013.
Bottle Number 15, Brewed on 26 August 2010, Bottled on 05 October 2010, Purchased 05 May 2012 and sampled 26 March 2013.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Elwood (2493) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - JAN 6, 2013
Serving: Small bottle from Julio’s Liquors. It pours an dark, blackish brown with a brown head. The nose is earthy with dark chocolate, roasted malt, slight smoke, and a slight berry note. The flavor is very complex with notes of peat, dark chocolate, smoke, dark berry, oak, and alcohol. Full bodied and flavorful. Outstanding brew.

330 ml bottle from Randall’s. Brewed 23 November 2009, bottled 08 January 2010. Bottle 298/1206. Pours a super deep, dark, opaque brown with a finger of dark tan head that settles into a wavy surface. Aroma of rich dark chocolate, fudge, roasted malts, and a deep earthy, peaty note under it all. Flavor of dark chocolate, coffee beans, brown sugar, toasted pecans, burnt toast, earth, leather, and wood. Almost smoky in its richness. A quick, odd metallic note hits right before the finish but vanishes into a long, rich, roasty finish. That odd note only hits on the first couple sips, too. Medium-full bodied, with a roasty, smooth mouthfeel and modest carbonation. So rich. Liked this one a lot.

Bottle shared by Elwood. Thanks! Pours a dark rust-brown color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of smoke, earth, peat, chocolate and roast. The taste is bitter earth, smoke, chocolate, raisin, bitter hop finish. Medium bodied. Quite nice.

15/12/2012 on tap @ GEIB (Vintage 2010). Nera, densa, impenetrabile, schiuma abbondante, cremosa e morbida, color cappuccino. Al naso forti sentori metallici, ematici, note di caffé sullo sfondo. In bocca meglio, malti tostati, caffè amaro, cioccolato, note di luppolo in evidenza, vaniglia, alcol. Corpo medio, consistenza oleosa, carbonazione soft. Ribattezzata "Blood & Iron".

Bottle consumed at Tryst in Delray Beach courtesy of Greg, thanks! Do not remember the bottle info
A: Pours a super viscous looking pitch black...10w-40. Gorgeous brown cap, and decent head/head retention for the big ABV.
S: Wow, just wow. Tons of ripe berries on top of chocolate covered strawberries. Chocolate, alcohol, wood, and some good hopping. Pretty complex
T: Craziness going on here, berries again, alcohol provides warmth but it doesn’t take away from the flavor, leather, vanilla, wood (barrel??), tons of chocolate and hop bitterness to balance. Really opens up with proper decanting.
MF/O: Thick, velvety, and silky on the palate. Bitterness gives it some bite, but the carbonation is pretty mellow. Overall a very pleasant surprise, and in my opinion, deserves a better rating. I will be seeking this out again.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dfhhead25 (251) - Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 19, 2012
Aroma- hops, chocolate, roasted notes, tobacco
Appearance- black with a khaki colored head, definite alcohol presence
Taste- hop bit upfront with burning alcohol, roasted notes and chocolate follow with some more hops/alcohol on the finish
Palate- nice body, slick mouthfeel
Overall- Very hoppy yet still relatively smooth stout from De Molen. The bottle I had was 2 years old and was still a little hot. A year or so more could have done it some good.
