3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring-on-Thames. Hazy amber with a billowing white head; rich, yeasty aroma; immediate, strong, hoppy taste, with a rich buttery body, some tropical fruit, and a slight sourness; then some spice and a lengthy finish leaving a warming feeling. Good stuff.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
11.2 oz bottle at home. Pours hazy and particulate amber to copper with a huge, foamy and frothy off-white head, long retention and excellent lacing. Aroma is earthy, spicy, floral, and herbal hops with cookie, caramel, and toast malt, apple and pear fruity esters. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, light supporting malt, light oxidation, fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium-full body, moderate carbonation and a light carbonic bite.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
33cl bottle, served in Irish Pint. Orange colour with medium white frothy head. The aroma is mostly orange peel with hints of belgian yeast and fruits. Lots of citrusy notes regarding taste, ripe fruits, and again the yeast providing an acid character. Medium body, good carbonation. Not outstanding, but well balanced.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle bought at The Bottle Shop in Sai Kung.
Cloudy hazy golden orange colour with lots of dirt-like yeast sediments; Two and a half finger head with rich, long lasting crumpety off white foam, like a Belgian ale. Very sticky lacing with soft fizzy carbonation;
Fragrant aroma of grapefruit, orange, lemon, honey, floral, wood, sweet malt, light spice and grass; Nice medium sweet taste of light grapefruit, orange, lemon, molasses, ale malt, earth, yeast, spices, light liquorices, bitter lime and grassy hops; Medium body, slick and quite oozy palate;
Mouth feel is good - but not great - grapefruit and lemon, with strong spice and earth taste dominates, rich malty feel with further sips; Spicy and resin-like, and the hoppy elements provide some real hard edge, so spicy it’s quite caustic to my lips. Some brew! Hoppiness is potent grapefruit / lemon and woody nose. Sharp, edgy spicy, earthy and resin taste, and creeping herbal grassy hops work their way up for moderate bitterness and lasting astringency. Fairly dry after taste:, very hop-spicy and wholesome to mouth.
Comments: The people at De Molen must be very thoughtful about each of their brews. They knew their IIPAs are for super-fresh fruity hop attacks, so they focus this IPA proper with pumped-up hop-spiciness. Excellent head and looks, taste very rustic and hard-edged to balance out a somewhat less refreshing grapefruit and citrus, yet exciting and enjoyable. A perfect case of ‘different strokes for different folks’ and this case of IPA - or shall I say at this level - the balancing act works out just fine. A nice one!
