appearance: Dark brown with a huge foam top. Great lacing! smell: Dark choclate, ripe fruit, candi sugar malts. taste: Sweet and bitter deep dark chocolate and licorice like. Some dark ripe fruits and quite a hint of alcohol. Is a bit like a stout, but sweeter and a very strong bitter kick. mouthfeel: Medium carbonation. Medium thickness, just like the taste suggests. overall: It has a nice deep flavor of all the nice things (Chocolate, ripe fruits, sweet and bitter), but lacks depth and development. Also it’s just a tad too alcohol heavy tasting to really enjoy for me. Didn’t like it actually. They have way better beers. I do like the flavor profile but this one just doesn’t work somehow. I could throw it away and not feel bad about it.

Bottle from 2012. Darker than expected, almost black. Moderate carbonation in this bottle (it varies). Aroma of dark fruits, belgian yeast and grass. Taste is full, well balanced, with aspects of dark chocolate, oak (!) and some vanilla. It actually reminds me of barrel aged Yeti (GD). Bitter ending where you can taste the saaz-hop. Really good.

Bottle at Bar Volo. Substantive bitterness, very coffee like. The aroma is very roasty. Black bodied. Lacey. A long bitter finish.

Bit odd. Not unpleasant. Too much cola. I like De Molen, even when they’re not brilliant they are still interesting. Just like me.

Bottle. Poured clear dark brown with an average to large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate complex hop floral aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Solid balanced bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a smooth complex solid beer.

330 ml. bottle. Bottled 2/13/12. Pours a thick, lasting, varied bubble beige head, with extensive lacing, over a slightly cloudy dark reddish brown (SRM 20) body....nose is heavy fruity malts, with plum, date, raisin, brown sugar, treacle, hints of spice.....taste is heavy sweet fruits with plum, raisin, date, leading to a harsh bitter, peach pit, spice finish......mouth feel thick, sticky, astringent, alcohol warmth present, carbonation low after the initial exuberance. This falls well into the Abt/Quad piece of the Belgian Dark Strong Ale style. The bitter finish is too harsh and lingers over much. This is probably from a badly handled bottle as neither of the hops used should do this. The net effect is that the flavors are off making for a disappointment in this particular bottle. Pours deep ruby-tinged mahogany into a snifter. Tan head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Caramel and pit fruit aromas. Dark caramel and chocolate upfront turning to dry pit fruit in the lasting hot pith finish.

Bottle. Pours brown with a light brown head that seems to last forever. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruits and caramel. Taste is also dark fruits and chocolate that lingers for quite a while.
