Slight gusher. Very black with some slightly red colour. Big off white, lasting head. Smells hoppy, grapefruit, chocolate. Tastes bitter, grapefruit, coffee, chocolate. The head also tastes amazing. Bitter, full body, great carbo, long after, sticky.

A: The beer pours a hazed dark brown color that foamed up a little as the bottle was opened. S: Smells of oak and vanilla initially. There’s a lot of roasted malt and a bit of toasted bread. A bit of cherry and nut shell aroma to go with some chocolate, coffee, and a light booziness. T: There is quite a bit of booze which gives the beer an almost tart flavor. Lots of roast and oak with some light toast notes. Cocoa powder and nuts with hints of licorice and molasses. M: Medium bodied with somewhat high carbonation for an imperial stout. O: I just don’t "get it" with these De Molen beers. This was mediocre.

Bottle from Brewdog Bar. Pours opaque black with a big head. The nose is reminiscent of an Imperial Brown Ale, but it’s a bit more fresh and frisky - then there’s a blue cheese note on the end. The taste is a bit simpler - nuts & cream. The palate is medium to large in both structure and texture and then a dry finish. Overall. it’s not bad, but somehow the elements didn’t all add up for me.

Bottle @ Home. Pours dark brown with a huge fluffy offwhite head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, dark dried fruit, sweet oranges. Taste is rather sweet at first, then overtaken by more hoppy/bitter notes with roasted malt, caramel, plums, grapefruit. Medium body, soft carbonation, lasting bitter finish, good drinkability. 240811

(Rating #3774)

Sweet aroma of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. There are also light hints of yeast. The foam top is unbelievable! Sweet taste of roasted malt and coffee with a slightly bitter and rough chocolate aroma. There is also a bit sour notes of yeast, orange peel and spicy hops. The bitterness remains in the aftertaste, but it never gets too pushy. Surprisingly easy to drink, something you must watch out for because the alcohol content is higher than 10%. The alcohol acts more like a nice warm side effect than as a flavor component. A fantastic beer!

Brown to black color, stout looking beer. Smell and taste lightly roasted and lightly bitter. Carbo nice, suits the ABV.

Grey to brown body with small head. Immediately get notes of ash. Strange. Luckily also forest, figs and yeast. Dry mouthfeel but with a light body (for this style) like whiskey. Malty sweetness in finish. Can’t get my head around this one. Didn’t like it really but brewed well and happy i’ve tried it. On tap at De Molen)

Bottle from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Poured a very dense murky dark brown colour with a huge tan head which hung around and then some. Cracking snout of fragrant hop, yeast, caramel malt and dark fruits. Lovely creamy smooth mouthfeel. Flavour was a similar treat with loads happening.....roasted coffee, earthy hop, malts, a little booze. Long lingering finish. Oh so drinkable. Yumdidlyumyum.
