3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
In short: A very roasted no-style black ale with a spicy edge. Good
How: Bottle 330ml. Consumed almost exactly one year after bottling date
The look: »Dark brown body topped by a large dark beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose is very roasted, burnt black cake, a little spiciness, some alcohol fumes. Taste is uber-roasted, burnt dark caramel, burnt fruit cake, burnt chocolate cake, burnt cacao, burnt nuts. And all that burnt sweet stuff complemented by a rather strong spiciness that is part black pepper, part anise and part “hot” spices. Alcohol is a bit apparent but not bothersome. Relatively low sweetness sensation because it is covered by the roast and spiciness. Very active carbonation that makes the beer a bit easier to drink Drinks relatively easy fro a 10% beer. And yet another great label from De Molen, I wonder what the De Molen label creator does for the other 23 hours and 55 minutes of his days.

Bottle enjoyed at home
Dark dark brown, massive tanned head. Smellso of malts, smoke and belgian yeast esters. Taste is quite malty, some sweetness. Quite peaty, very dominant actually. Fruity tones too. Oily palate, bitter finish. A very nice beer

Bottle from Nina’s. Pours a dark brown colour with a thick, light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, yeast and grassy hops. Similar chocolately flavour with roasty malt, caramel and some pine also. Heavy carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel. Not bad at all.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Valkendorfsgate, Bergen. Pours a huge light beige foamy head with a deep brown, red-hued body beneath it. Belgian ale yeast, molasses, raisin and hints of nuts. Taste is raisins, grass, nuts, dark malts and hints of molasses and Belgian ale yeast. Roasty/grassy aftertaste. A bit over-carbonated in my opinion, otherwise a pleasant and rich BSA from De Molen.

330ml bottle shared by blankboy with me and garthicus. 2010 vintage. Deep reddish-black, average but lasting pillowy tan head. Very interesting aroma - like an imperial stout blended with a fruity strong ale like Chimay Blue - deep roast, molasses, raisins, alcohol ... apple, quite herbal. Taste - lovely - the above, some nutmeat and appleseed; oily, even more alcohol, leans a bit more toward imperial stout than the aroma. Oily, somewhat thick mouthfeel, decent carbonation, long-ish slightly burnt somewhat alcoholic finish. Quite liked it.

Thanks to Blankboy. Appearance: Pitch black, thick off white head. Aroma: spicy chocolate, quite hoppy, coffee, slight hint of mint & alcohol. Flavour: Chocolate hops, spicy, hoppy, quite a sherry like flavour, long sticky malty finish. Lovely.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap. Deep brown in color. Minimal head. The aroma is of hot alcohol and sweet roasted malts. Wood and raisin. The taste is quite sweet, but sharp from the alcohol. Given that, this is well rounded, with a nice medium/heavy mouthfeel that’s slick on the tongue. For whatever reason, this beer felt a bit less than the sum of its parts. I look forward to giving it another shot, though.

Picked up a bottle while visiting Cambridge UK. Actually thought it was something comparable to their Rasputin when I purchased the bottle. Popped off the cap and foam started oozing out the top. Poured dark brown with a huge head. Taste isn’t what I expected for a Belgian strong ale (e.g. sweet). Burnt malt, spices and balanced hops. Lots of lingering taste in the mouth. Damn good.
